Check out the biggest flops of 2018 including Thugs of Hindostan, Zero, Race 3, Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Namaste England!

While 2018 has been a decent year for Bollywood with several films turning into hits and quite a few of them earning in excess of Rs 100 crore, we even saw some movies flop at the box office. In fact, biggies like Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan, Salman Khan’s Race 3 and Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero faltered big time at the ticket window. A lot was expected from them, however, faulty screenplay, poor script and below par performances left the audiences running away from these movies. But it’s not just these three movies, a few others like Namaste England and Batti Gul Meter Chalu also faltered at the box office.

These films not only had a huge investment, but with the poor collections, they even failed to recover the required moolah. With that, several exhibitors and distributors lost money. The films in turn became the biggest box office duds of 2018. But which one is the most unprofitable film? Read on to know…

# Namaste England

Cost: Rs 35 crore

Lifetime collection: Rs 9 crore

Return on investment: – Rs 26 crore

ROI %: – 74

Being the sequel to a hit film like Namaste London, a lot was expected from this Arjun Kapoor – Parineeti Chopra starrer, especially with their crackling chemistry making the audience excited. However, with a lacklustre story and a very poor screenplay, the film fell flat and didn’t even enter the double-figure crores at the domestic box office.

# Batti Gul Meter Chalu

Cost: Rs 50 crore

Lifetime collection: Rs 38 crore

Return on investment: – Rs 12 crore

ROI %: – 24

A social drama about a very relevant subject along with talented stars like Shahid Kapoor, Yami Gautam and Shraddha Kapoor should have been a bonafide hit, right? However, with a high production value, sub-par execution of the subject and a shoddy final product, left the makers with a heavy dent in their pockets.

# Zero

Cost: Rs 125 crore

Lifetime collection (expected): Rs 100 crore

Return on investment: – Rs 25 crore

ROI %: – 20

Though this film has just released, but the fact that it has got poor reviews and not seen any spike in collections over the first week, means that this Shah Rukh Khan – Anushka Sharma – Katrina Kaif starrer will end up losing money. In fact, Zero might just touch the Rs 100 crore mark, but with a huge VFX and production budget, the makers are going to lose some huge money.

# Thugs of Hindostan

Cost: Rs 180 crore

Lifetime collection: Rs 151.90 crore

Return on investment: – Rs 28.10 crore

ROI %: – 15.61

Touted to be the biggest film of the decade, a lot of hype was generated around Thugs of Hindostan. But after a record breaking first day, the film tanked and could garner only Rs 150 crore at the domestic box office, meaning that the makers, who had invested heavily on the VFX of the movie, would end up losing money. The poor execution, predictable plot and screenplay are the major factors for the film’s downfall.

# Race 3

Cost: Rs 120 crore

Lifetime collection: Rs 166.40 crore

Return on investment: Rs 46.40 crore

ROI %: 38.66

While Race 3 did make a slight profit at the box office, the fact that such a huge franchise film struggled at the box office especially with stars like Salman Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Bobby Deol being a part of the movie, is reason enough for Race 3 making to this list. A flawed storyline, bad editing and screenplay left the audience calling it one of the worst films till date.

Surprised to see Thugs of Hindostan, Zero and Race 3 in the biggest duds list na? Well, it is very clear that if you get your content wrong, the audience will surely reject you. We wonder how the biggies will fare in 2019? Will Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman Khan rise once again next year? To know that and more, stay tuned to Cine Blitz right here.
