Kalank was one of the most-exciting films of the year. In fact, with a fantastic story being presented on a large scale with a stellar cast of Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit, everyone was expecting it to shatter records at the box office. It even took a huge opening of Rs 21.60 crore on day 1. But come the extended weekend and Kalank has under-performed massively. In fact, on day 5 (Sunday), the movie couldn’t see any sort of jump. It managed to collect Rs 10 – 11 crore, as per early estimates. And with that, it has just managed to collect Rs 65 crore (approx).
This is nowhere what was predicted for Kalank. The trade was expecting Varun – Alia’s film to rake in at least Rs 100 crore plus at the box office over the weekend. With such a huge buzz, a stellar star cast and 4,000 screens at its disposal, it was all possible. To top it all, there was no film in immediate competition to steal the thunder. In fact, the period drama even enjoyed two partial holidays (Mahavir Jayanti and Good Friday). However, it failed to capitalise, failing miserably at the box office. The mixed reviews from the critics as well as audience might have played spoil sport.

While Abhishek Varman’s Kalank is a heart-wrenchingly beautiful movie, it is long and complex. That might have affected its outcome. Anyway, what do you have to say about the period drama?
