2018 has been a drastically different year for Bollywood. Filmmakers have finally realised that a big-ticket movie will never work if they do not support it with good content, while also understanding that a small budget film can give them a massive return on investment and box office collections if it has an interesting and engaging plot. However, one thing remained constant and that is the box office openings. Unlike their lifetime collections, big budget films like Race 3, Thugs of Hindostan and even Zero collected some fantastic amounts over the opening weekend. While an opening weekend is important for the film’s momentum, how it sustains post it is not determined by the first three days figures and that was proved last year. But which film has the highest first weekend collection for 2018? Well, you are in for a surprise!
Thugs of Hindostan leads the way with an opening weekend collection of Rs 123 crore at the domestic box office. Though its lifetime collection is not much more than Rs 150 crore, the film did take a fantastic start in its first weekend, before crashing. Number two on the list is Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju, which went on to become the highest lifetime grosser of the year. Padmaavat, Race 3 and 2.0 complete the top 5; with Simmba, Baaghi 2, Gold, Zero and Satyameva Jayate making up the list of top 10 highest opening weekend grossers of 2018. Check out how much each of these movies made in their first weekend in the chart below!
While most of these went on to collect huge amounts in their lifetime run, a few like Zero, Race 3 and Thugs of Hindostan tanked at the domestic box office post their opening weekend. Clearly proving that anything can happen at the ticket window and the audience is the king. Anyway, which out of these highest opening weekend grossers was your favourite?
