Pa Ranjith, who has directed superstar Rajinikanth in films like Kaala and Kabali, besides being an acclaimed filmmaker is known to be quite a social activist as well. He has talked about many raging issues but his recent statement has landed him in legal trouble. An arrest warrant was issued against the director for speaking about a revered ancient ruler.

Ranjith spoke about the exploitation of women systematised under the devadasi system during the rule of Raja Raja Chozha, the 10th-century Chozha king and it did not go well for him. After receiving the warrant, Ranjith applied for an anticipatory bail in the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. However, when the case came up for hearing, the director was not granted bail.

Ranjith claimed that he had only quoted historical fact and not hurt the sentiments of any section of the society to which the judge advised him to avoid speaking about a revered ancient ruler when there are so many other issues to be addressed.

The director was later granted bail on one condition that he would stay in the vicinity and for the coming three days he will sign the police register at Thirupananthal.
