It’s that time of the year when everyone comes together, forgetting and forgiving all the wrongdoings, to celebrate the festival of colours with much enthusiasm and zest. Yes, it’s Holi but the festival wouldn’t be complete without a touch of Bollywood, right? Hindi films and Holi have had a long existing relationship and there is no getting away from either. In fact, Bollywood has always taken inspiration from the festivities in India and has embraced it on the big screen quite beautifully.  Similarly, Holi wouldn’t be the same without our favourite Bollywood dance numbers playing out loud; the famous bhang and the now symbolic white unsaid dress code (kind of wonder which one came first). But in films, Holi songs are not always happy dance numbers where everyone is having a good time. Sometimes they even depict sadness when things go horribly wrong. Take a look!

Sholay

Sholay is the ultimate cult film that showcased the scene of Holi like no other. The biggest dramatic moment of the movie comes during this scene. The audience watched with fascination as Gabbar and his gang descended onto Ramgarh while the entire village was busy in celebration.

Silsila

Back in the day, this Yash Chopra film had one of the most elaborate star cast with an even more complicated storyline. And who can forget the iconic Holi number Rang Barse. The song is intense and emotional as well because just before it starts Chandni (Rekha) and Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) confesses to their spouses that they didn’t marry the person they loved.

Yeh Jaawani Hai Deewani

Probably one of the most playful and exhilarating Holi numbers of the recent times is from this Ayan Mukerji blockbuster. The song Balam Pichkari comes at a monumental point in the movie where the lead pair –  Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor – head their own ways after enjoying the festival of colours. Of course, it wasn’t something that we expected while watching the movie. Apart from that, Deepika also comes out of her shell during this song and ends up becoming a free-spirited soul.

Darr

King Khan gave one of his best performances when he played a negative role in Darr. It is during the Holi song in the movie that Shah Rukh finally says the golden words to Juhi Chawla – I love you k-k-kiran – giving us all goosebumps. Undoubtedly, it’s one of the most iconic Holi scenes of Hindi cinema.

Mohabbatein

In this blockbuster, Amitabh Bachchan’s character finally mellows down a bit during the festive occasion of Holi and allows Shah Rukh Khan’s character to apply a gulal ka tikka on his forehead. Thereafter, the students of Gurukul play Holi and enjoy the festival after years.

Damini

One of the most realistic films of its time, the whole focal point of Damini was actress Meenakshi Sheshadri walking into a heinous crime. It’s during the Holi song that she discovers her domestic help is being raped by her drunken brother-in-law and his three friends.  This is when the movie picks up the 5th gear and Sunny Deol enters as the lawyer who helps the women get justice.

Padmaavat

The Holi scene in this Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-Shahid Kapoor starrer is sort of a turning point and symbolic too. Ranveer Singh as Khilji shocks everyone when he decides to make peace with the Rajputs. Khilji (who is Muslim) goes against his norms and colours his face orange on Holi as a mark of mutual respect and understanding.
