As a Creative Producer and showrunner, Sanjay Kohli & Binaiferr Kohli have handled multiple shows— Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai!, Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, FIR, May I come in Madam,Family No 1, Jijaji Chhat Par Hai, etc etc. She is happy with the response around each of these shows.
“I’m anyway a multi-tasker and a workaholic. I work 16 to 18 hours a day and I love it. Secondly, I have a team, which is really old and strong. Some of them are 25 years with us, some are there for 12 years. I think the youngest as far as the number of years of service is concerned is 12 years. Most of them started with us. We have a superb team who are as workaholic as we are, that is Sanjay [Kohli; husband, producer, director and showrunner] and I. We love our work. Every show is like our baby, so we love whatever we do and we don’t like to do anything that we do not like,” she says.
When there are multiple comedy shows on air, it is a challenge to think of different tracks and not end up with something similar story-wise. “It does become a challenge to think of different tracks. Sometimes you can have similar tracks also because if you are doing something on cleanliness, you’re doing something on jealousy, it can be similar tracks. But it’s like everybody can make a similar track, but whoever makes it well, will sell it well in terms of watch worthy. Also, each story is different, and has a different set of characters. We strive for the best and make some super comedy shows,” she adds.

As a producer, according to Binaiferr, the most challenging part of producing comedy shows, is the genre itself. “I’ve said before that one episode of a comedy show is equal to five episodes of a daily soap. The writing, execution, acting, everything needs to be in tandem and has to be superior. The genre of comedy is still and will always be a strong point in TV, because everybody wants to laugh, and be happy. It’s like your proper ‘Thali’. Basically your dal, rice is your comedy. People like to watch a little bit of thriller and love everything else, but everybody likes to be happy at the end of the day,” she adds.
Ask if she thinks comedy web series can work as well as comedy shows on TV and Binaiferr answers, “Yes, I do. TV audiences are more loyal to its comedy shows than OTT, but if you make a good OTT comedy, that will also do very well. A comedy web series will work as well as a comedy show on TV. If you really make them well, if you really can make people laugh that much, if you really have a feel good factor, why will it not do well?”

Sharing her future plans, Binaiferr says that there are more projects that the team is planning. They want to experiment and do something more interesting and different. “Well, in the pipeline we have a few shows and web series which I would like to talk about when they go on the floors or closer to its release. So far, we’ve only been doing very limited work because Sanjay ji likes to do very limited yet quality work. If you see all our shows have run for a long time and are always up on the TRP list. Our show, May I Come in Madam, FIR, Jijaji chhat par hai etc were super hits, another show that we did on Zee, Mere Apne was also a hit. Family Number 1 is one of the five best shows on television. And so we like to concentrate on whatever we are doing and that is doing well and doing limited work. For us it’s always quality over quantity,” she signs off.
