Delnaaz Irani Opens Up On ‘Only Big Festival’ She Celebrates With Beau, Family

Actress Delnaaz Irani has revealed that the Parsi New Year is one “big festival” that she likes to celebrate with her beau Percy Karkaria and family. “For me and Percy, it is extremely important. It’s the only big festival that we celebrate. It’s our new year. It’s always been a very important day for me. It’s the only festival where we all get together. There’s a lot of food and ‘masti’. But in these COVID times, we didn’t do much,” she said about the big day that was celebrated on August 16 this year.

Had there been no pandemic, she would have gone to the fire temple. “You have to wear new sudreh and kusti. That’s the Janoi that we have. We need to go to Agiyari to pray. That is the first thing that every parsi does then of course a lavish lunch happens. This time, we ate at my mother’s house with just close family members. Then we had some mint masala Parsi chai with cupcakes,” she said.

“The one thing that I want on this new year is that all my near and dear ones should remain safe. That’s the biggest happiness that one will get,” she added. Sharing some fond memories, Delnaaz said, “As kids, we used to meet at my Nana-Nani’s house. Cousins, aunts, uncles everybody used to be there. We were almost 50 of us. Nani used to prepare all the food with a little help from others. There used to be delicacies like mutton cutlets. We are pure non-vegetarians and everybody knows that parsis love their non-vegetarian food, so it would be all lavish spread like pulao dal, cutlets, chicken and fish items. Food played a very very big part.” “Mumma used to make vermicelli in the morning. It was like an auspicious thing. It used to be like Sev and Ravo. We used to have breakfast together then go to the fire temple, wearing all new clothes and then have lavish lunch. It was all good fun with the family. In the evening, we would disperse for a Parsi play. Later, I started doing theatre and people used to come and watch my plays, so I used to do Parsi New Year play, the Parsi natak set.”

Now that they are all grown up, they are staying in different locations. “Porus, my elder brother, is always in London. My other cousin is in America. They have gone to various places. All my cousins are married, so in the past few years we didn’t have a major get-together,” said Delnaaz. As for work, she has a film to be helmed by Kashmera Shah.
