Junglee star Vidyut Jammwal believes the film will change Hindi cinema irrevocably. Here’s why…

Vidyut Jammwal is happiest talking about the bond he created with the elephants whilst shooting for the film Junglee, in the natural habitat of the majestic animals. Spending time with the elephants was according to him, the best part of the film, which is also being talked about for his daring stunts amidst a herd of elephants. In an exclusive chat he tells us that search engines inform just a few things about the huge creature, and that there is so much more to the animal than what any search engine knows.

How was your tuning with the elephants?

It was quite good. While working on Junglee, I had to untrain myself. The first thing we need to know is that they don’t take compliments like ‘I like your sunglasses or your watch’ (grins). You need to sincerely connect to them and they can sense that. All the creatures can, including human beings. So the way I connect with human beings is the way I connect with elephants – with complete sincerity. If there is nothing to say, I don’t say anything. Animals are the same.

With the grueling shooting schedule you were working, did you get to enjoy your relationship with the elephants?

When you are with the elephant, they are so majestic, you need to be careful. You just cannot underestimate them. Of course we all enjoyed being with them. The important thing with Chuck (director Chuck Russell) is that he let the elephants be. If it is their eating time, he won’t force them to shoot. The elephants were a constant in the film, and we had 25 elephants on the sets every day. But let me tell you what the movie will do. First of all, we have not had such a film in the last 30 to 40 years. The film will make everyone aware what the other creatures are like. They will realise there is a deep connect between human beings and all other creatures. The film is for kids, for families, for them to learn without being taught. Awareness will increase that in the next 10 years, if we don’t stop what we are doing, we will not have elephants and they will be the next dinosaurs. Every 15 seconds an elephant is killed somewhere in the world, and we don’t care. They will become extinct in 10 years, maybe lesser, if we do not stop their killing and ill-treatment.

So, you think this film will change this to a noticeable degree?

This movie, and I can say that with great belief, will change a lot about Hindi cinema. First of all, we will start making movies on animals. There is a need for it because the emotions are very high.

While Vidyut is not yet an active part of any animal rights groups or ‘Save the animals’ kind of organisations, he is certainly going to be associated with some in the future. We’ll keep you posted. In the meanwhile, stay tuned to CineBlitz for Bollywood news, updates and gossip!
