Ananya Panday, Tara Sutaria, Meezaan Jaaferi – The promising Gen Next stars of Bollywood!

Suguna Sundaram walks through the garden of newbies, the hopefuls whose films hit the marquee in 2019.

While 2018 saw quite a few new dreamers setting foot in tinsel town, 2019 holds even more promise. And it’s not just star kids claiming home territory. There are a fair number of imports from non-film backgrounds, hoping to hitch their wagon to a star-maker, apart from the privileged star kids. And today’s aspiring stars come fully prepared, going through rigorous training and regimes, in order to put forward the best versions of themselves, as they step into their world of dreams. Suguna Sundaram walks through the garden of newbies, the hopefuls whose films hit the marquee in 2019.

The chrysalis that revealed the metamorphosis of unknown youngsters into actors in 2018, displayed a host of talent, from the industry and outside. But only a few made the cut for whatever reasons. Leading the parade with all the hoopla was Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s daughter Sara Ali Khan, who debuted with Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath, quickly followed by a second release, Rohit Shetty’s Simmba. Kedarnath, with the Uttarakhand floods of 2013 as the story backdrop, was a tragic romantic drama. Sara walked off with all the kudos for the film, despite the presence of senior co-star Sushant Singh Rajput. Her pilgrimage at the altar of the big screen paid off!

2019 is an exciting watch

Ananya Panday

A promising young talent to watch out for is Ananya Panday, daughter of Chunky and Bhavna Panday, whose debut vehicle is Karan Johar’s sequel, Student Of The Year 2. Already a mini-celeb on social media, hugely popular on fashion blogs and party circuits, Ananya, barely out of school, is poised and confident, not to mention, extremely pretty. She is part of the thick-as-thieves girl gang with Suhana Shah Rukh Khan and Shanaya Sanjay Kapoor. Ananya looks ready to shed her schoolgirl image, for that of a college student.

Abhimanyu Dassani

Abhimanyu Dassani (son of Bhagyashree and Himalaya Dassani) debuts with Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, an action comedy directed by Vasan Bala, a year later than scheduled. The sneak previews reveal that Abhimanyu makes his presence unmissable, with his impressive, and vibrant performance. His macho presence is of course, cut out for action films.

Alaia Furniturewala

Alaia Furniturewala, the fresh-faced, sexy and feisty daughter of the sultry Pooja Bedi waits in the wings too. Already seeing a fan following in lakhs due to her social media presence, this young actor has an eagerly awaited debut. Alaia will be seen in Jawani Janeman, where she will essay the role of Saif Ali Khan’s daughter.

Karan Kapadia, son of the late Simple Kapadia, and nephew to Dimple, will debut with the film Blank, which will hit the screens soon. The film incidentally, also stars Sunny Deol. Since this is one debut under wraps, Karan Kapadia’s performance will define the writing on the as yet blank slate.

Tara Sutaria

Tara Sutaria is not exactly a novice in front of the camera. She is already a video jockey, a professional singer, and a television star. But her Bollywood entry will be in Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year 2, followed by another film in 2019, Marjaavaan. Remains to be seen if she will garner as many die-hard fans for her big screen debut!

Meezan Jaaferi and Sharmin Segal

Meezaan Jaaferi (Jaaved Jaffrey’s son) has begun work on a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production Malaal, directed by award-winning director Mangesh Hadawale. The film will also introduce Bhansali’s niece Sharmin Segal (daughter of his sister Bela, and Deepak Segal). The two are being touted as youngsters to watch out for, both, in terms of chemistry, and individual talent on screen. The film will hit the screens sometime this year.

Sunny Deol’s son Karan Deol, will step into the 70 mm world with his father launching him in Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (the title gleaned from a hit song from his grandfather Dharmendra’s film). The film is set in the hilly north of India, and purports to be a romantic musical. Déjà vu anyone, betaab to see Karan Deol?

Apart from these youngsters, there is also a whole bunch of Bollywood entrants, some completely alien to this world, and some who have filtered through from the television industry, though they may not quite qualify as young, in comparison.

Saher Bamba, a Himachali lass, will debut as Karan Deol’s heroine in Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas. Filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala will introduce two absolutely fresh faces, namely Nupur Sanon (sister of the gorgeous Kriti Sanon), and Ahaan Shetty, who’s breathed nothing but Bollywood air since birth, his father being action star Suneil Shetty. The beautiful English rose Katrina Kaif’s sister Isabel is dancing her way into Hindi films, with Sooraj Pancholi. Surilie Gautam (Yami’s sibling) will be the face opposite Randeep Hooda in Battle of Saragarhi.

Salman Khan will launch his annual quota of freshers this year, namely Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Behl (daughter of Mohnish Bahl, and granddaughter of the unmatched Nutan), in a film directed by Nitin Kakkar, titled Notebook, and set in Kashmir. Salman will also be launching director Mahesh Manjrekar’s daughter Ashwami in Dabangg 3. Ashwami is a late entrant into films, considering she enters her thirties this year.

The 35-year-old TV actor Nandish Sandhu will be seen on the big screen for the first time in the much-maligned Vikas Behl’s Hrithik Roshan starrer Super 30. Another divine import from Telly is Mohit (Mahadev) Raina, who debuted in Vicky Kaushal’s Uri-The Surgical Strike. TV anchor/actress Pooja Gor, enters Bollywood lanes with Gully Boy. The fantastic Brahmastra with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, gives us Saurav Gurjar, the WWE star-turned-TV star, now hoping to turn Bollywood star. Emraan Hashmi’s Why Cheat India has web-series actress-cum-model, Shreya Dhanwanthary in her Bollywood debut, also at age 30.

Last heard, Shah Rukh Khan’s darling daughter Suhana had wowed London with her performance as Juliet on stage. That is definitely promising news, albeit premature. Shah Rukh did confirm that Suhana wanted to become an actor, not necessarily in Hindi films though. But we can always hope…

Across the gamut, what’s visible is that the age of entry has now gone up by a few years, in which time aspiring stars either gain training or film-related experience, and are not running to net roles in their tender teens, like the days of yore. Today, age is really just a number, and the kind of films being made, assure roles for every age and every category of actor. What needs to sustain is one’s talent and commitment to good work, if one does not want to be a flash in the pan, generously balanced with the blessings of Lady Luck.

Kabir Khan’s directorial venture 83 is currently the talk of the town and for obvious reasons. Since we were the first ones to inform about the various entries to the huge ensemble star cast, we thought it was time to give you all one more update. Just today, our sources have told us that actor Vijay Varma has been roped in to play all-rounder Roger Binny in the highly anticipated biopic which stars Ranveer Singh in the lead. While we tried to get a confirmation on the same from Vijay, he chose not to comment on it.

When asked about 83, Vijay simply said, “I cannot comment anything about 83 right now.” But we got our answer, didn’t we? Earlier this week, we had also informed you that actor-filmmaker Addinath Kothare has been cast as the ace batsman Dilip Vengsarkar. And now Vijay Varma, who played Moeen in Zoya Akhtar’s recent release Gully Boy, has joined the cast. Well, if that’s the case then good for him because he is quite talented. As Roger Binny, apart from being an all-rounder, he is remembered for his terrific bowling performance in the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

Since Vijay has impressed everyone with his performance in Gully Boy, watching him transform into Binny’s character will be fun. 83, wherein Ranveer will play the role of Kapil Dev, will soon go on floors. Last month, RS began his net practice and Kabir Khan was spotted on recce tour to the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, in London, where the iconic victorious match was played.
