Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla had already generated a lot of excitement amongst the fans. Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu were reuniting after Pink, and that too for a murder mystery. The makers dropped the Badla trailer today (February 02) and it recorded a record number of views in just a few minutes. Looks like the audience too can’t wait to catch this thriller. But one thing that caught everyone’s attention is the fact that Sujoy Ghosh has ditched his favourite city, Kolkata. Instead, he chose to shoot the film in the snowy atmosphere of Scotland. Kolkata has featured majorly in most of Sujoy’s works. The city itself has lent a certain character to his films, like it did in the Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani (2012). So, it was quite surprising to see Sujoy give up Kolkata for Scotland in Badla!

Point this out to the filmmaker and he agrees! “Had the film been shot in Kolkata, we would have had to do away with Mr Bachchan’s sharp-suited, dapper look of an investigator in the film and made him look like Byomkesh Bakshi,” says Sujoy jokingly. He further adds, “not that we would not have loved to see him in that avatar.” On a serious note, explaining his reason, he reveals to us exclusively, “The premise of Badla was such that it needed the leads to be in a certain set-up. The eerie atmosphere of Scotland naturally lends itself to adding layers of mystery to the thriller. There’s a certain melancholic vibe to the snowed in places there which we wanted to tap.”

As the name suggests and the trailer reveals, Badla is a revenge thriller. Taapsee plays a married woman, Naina Sethi, who finds herself accused in her lover’s murder. On the other hand, Amitabh Bachchan plays Badal Gupta who is investigating the case. The film, adapted from 2016’s Spanish revenge thriller Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest), will be exciting to watch. Slated to release on March 8, stay tuned to Cine Blitz for news and gossip about Badla.
