Iconic music director and singer Bappi Lahiri was known as the disco king of Bollywood. Bappi Lahiri was one of the most famous music directors ever – while his real name was Alokesh Lahiri and he was a nephew of legendary singer Kishore Kumar, he became famous as Bappi Lahiri, a unique personality who made disco music popular across the country. With his trademark jewellery adorning his neck, he one of the most recognised faces of Bollywood.
He started his career in the 1970’s, but made a splash with Mithun Chakraborty’s blockbuster Disco Dancer. Throughout the 1980’s he was a name to reckon with, particularly known for peppy upbeat numbers which were easy listening for youngsters. His phase with Jeetendra Sridevi films made down South meant that he was sometimes composing music for more than 50 films at a time! Bappi Lahiri passed away in a Mumbai hospital at the age of 69 on February 15th.
