Cricket and Bollywood have had a long existing history of rumoured courting and friendships. But after the last episode of Koffee with Karan, which featured Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul on the infamous couch, it might have dampen these ties.

Cricket has always been a gentlemen’s game, or so to say with the likes of Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar,  Ms Dhoni,  and Rahul Dravid being role models with impeccable behaviour both on and off field.. Now is the the time of Virat Kohli and his brash young boys in blue, known for their recent historic victory in Australia. It is also time of social media, brand and image conscious players.

Hardik ( Hard-dick always! for his girls ) Pandya has issued a public apology on his twitter saying “ After reflecting on my comments on Kofee with Karan, I would like to apologise to everyone concerened who I may have hurt in any way. Honestly , I gt a bit carried away with the nature of the show. In no way did I mean to disrespect or hurt anyones’s sentiments. Respect .”

The Koffee with Karan episode sparked outrage over social media as soon as it aired. Pandya’s tone -deaf remarks about women was sexist and misogynistic to say the least. Pandya was quick to mention how his style and sensibility is influenced by the “West Indian and Black culture”. When asked about his past relationships, Pandya categorised it into seeing, dating and being in a relationship. This was a start to a sad downhill road that carried on for the next 35 mins to come.

Co guest KL Rahul admitted to how frequently ‘close friend” Pandya, often forgets the names of the women he has been with. Also to the point where he has received screenshots of women complaining of the same messages/ pick-up lines  he sent out  to multiple women.  Pandya had the audacity to say how he likes to observe women dancing at clubs – a fetish he attributes to his ‘black side’ and his appreciation for West Indian Culture, so he gets an idea of how they would move in other areas(yickes .) Creepyyyy !!

Then this interview takes another twisted turn when Pandya talks about his equation with his family,  probably trying to show how cool they are. Trying to prove that, he said he was in a room full of women he has been with, with his family present and how he pointed out to them while boasting about it to his parents. Are women just trophies for him?   This entire episode was just creepy and twisted and sexist to the core.

In such a sensitive time with the #Metoo movement that swept through classes, caste , regions and industries, it was disappointing seeing two of India’s next generation  cricketers boasting about sexual encounters and casual misogyny.  They may not have even realised how offensive their comments where and what impact they have as role models to young boys and girls. Sad !!!!!!!
