In effect from past Wednesday (March 20), a much-discussed deal has finally become official, after a year. The Walt Disney Company has acquired India TV giant, Star.  Star is a Mumbai based Media Company with a huge array of televised content, from dozens of regional entertainment and sports channels. According to reports, 21st Century Fox closed this massive deal with The Walt Disney Company at $71 billion. Owned by American media Moghul Rupert Murdoch, founded 21st Century Fox and ran it for 39 years.

Rupert Murdoch’s former empire including 21st Century Fox’s film production businesses, Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Fox Family and Fox Animation, etc. The deal also makes Disney the owner of Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group. WhileMurdoch may have lost power as an executive, he will have no official position at Disney. However, analysts only expect it to get better for him.”Combining Disney’s and 21st Century Fox’s wealth of creative content and proven talent creates the pre-eminent global entertainment company, well positioned to lead in an incredibly dynamic and transformative era.” Bob Iger, Chairman-CEO, Disney said in their statement.

Disney, which now owns the movie studios Marvel, Pixar, LucasFilm and a new host of Fox programs and intellectual property (including the Simpsons, X-Files and Deadpool), is primed to become an even bigger player in Hollywood. The new intellectual property could help the giant expand its revenue from theme parks, merchandise, movie tickets and more. And it could also help fuel Disney’s forthcoming family-oriented streaming service, which the company hopes will rival Netflix and become a major player in the world of on-demand entertainment. What do you think about this deal?
