Actor Manoj Bajpayee has been honoured with the Padma Shri this year (2019). And for the actor – who is best known for his roles in ShoolSatyaGangs of Wasseypur Part 1, Special 26 and Aligarh among others – this honour is special for more reasons than one. When contacted, Manoj shared, “It is good news as this year I also complete 25 years in the film industry.” There has been buzz in the industry that the honour was long overdue. Point this out to Manoj and he says, “Well, my family kept on waiting for it every year. Each time there would be rumours in the industry that I am getting it, but didn’t. And now that my name has finally been announced, I am happy with this honour and I accept it wholeheartedly. Above all, my parents and wife are very happy.”

Manoj – who won the Best Actor Award for his performance in Aligarh at the Asia Pacific Screen Award – has also won a National Award for Satya. He has acted in 84 films, and has won over 10 awards and 16 nominations. The actor hails from Narkatiyaganj in Bihar and adds that his village would be proud of him too. He says, “I really thank my parents for supporting me and I’m also thankful to my wife who always believed that my contribution to cinema and society will be recognised. It is one of the highest civilian honours and if you are honoured by the President, it is a great achievement for a village boy and it is a huge honour for Manoj Bajpayee – the actor and his village.”

Manoj’s most recent outing on the big screen was Satyamev Jayate that also starred John Abraham. Last year he was also seen in Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2. His upcoming films include the much-talked about Abhishek Chaubey film Sonchiriya.

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the Government of India every year on India’s Republic Day.
