Girish Karnad, one of the most-noted playwrights, actor and director, passed away today (June 10), at the age of 81. With this sad news, PM Narendra Modi, Bollywood celebs like Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Shruti Haasan, Divya Dutta, and south stars Kamal Haasan, Siddharth and Rahul Ravindran, took to social media to share their condolences.
PM Narendra Modi tweeted: “Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him. His works will continue being popular in the years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace.”
Anil Kapoor tweeted: “I met Girish Karnad way back when he was the principal of the film institute & then worked with him in Pukar. He was a great man & playwright. His stories will forever remain in our hearts & minds. Sending my prayers & heartfelt condolences to his family.” Juhi, in a statement to the press said, “A very very fine actor , we had no scenes together, but I was so glad he was playing Shabanaji’s husband in Chalk n Duster , he lent such warmth and dignity to every character he essayed.”

Girish Karnad was conferred the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and in 1998 he was a recipient of the Jnanpith award which is the highest literary honour. We at CineBlitz too offer our condolences to the Karnad family
