I still cannot believe that the nightingale Vani Jairam who shot to fame with the song Bol Re Papihara four decades ago with the film Guddi died yesterday three or four days after she was conferred with the prestigeous Padma award. I had struck a great chemistry with her when I interviewed her for Femina and from then onwards Vani who I used to call Akka the female equivalent of Anna has always had a filial affection towards me.

Vani was kbown in Bollywood as the Bol Re Papihara girl and as Malligai En Mannan Mayangum Ponnana Malarallava. She died at the age of 78 after having been conferred with the Padma award. Vani had lost her husband three years ago.

Vani and her late husband Jairam used to gift me shirts every time they used to visit Mumbai where they owned a flat in the posh area of Peddar Road and whenever i used to visit them in Chennai they used to insist that i visit their bungalow for lunch or dinner. Sadly, they didnt have a child.

Vani had sung for almost all the top music directors including O.P.Nayyar, Ilayaraja etc abd unfortunately denied her rightful due in both Bollywood as well as the South though though she was a versatile musical prodigy.

Vani was simple sweet and humble to the core and was totally devastated when she lost her dear husband three years ago and was living all alone at her nungambakkam residence.

Though she was found by her maid servant in a bad condition with her head and neck injured, I hope there was no foul play in her death. I will miss my dear Akka which means Elder Sister in Tamil.
