The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne that is all set to begin on August 8 has been making headlines for various reasons. Rima Das’ Bulbul Can Sing was announced as the opening film and the organisers have now also released the nomination list. After impressing the audience in India, films like Gully Boy, Andhadhun andSuper Delux have now made it big in the list and here are all the details.
IFFM is one of the biggest festivals that celebrates Indian cinema every year. This time around, the films that have backed the most number of nominations are Gully Boy andAndhadhun with four nominations each, Rima Das’ Bulbul Can Sing with two nominations and Super Deluxe with three. The jury this year will include Academy Award winner Jill Bilcock, screenwriter Fred Schepisi, Victoria Hill known for her work in films like Macbeth, First Reformed and The Chaperone and Vince Colosimo, who is an AFI award winning actor. The opening ceremony will be graced by Shah Rukh Khan who will present Bulbul Can Sing to the Australian audience.
The nominations for 2019 are as follows:
Best Indie Film – Widow of Silence, Bulbul Can Sing, The Golden Sheep and the Sacred Mountain, Namdev Bhau, Bhonsle, Chuskit, Bhoga Khirkee
Best Director – Sriram Raghavan forAndhadhun, Zoya Akhtar for Gully Boy, Thiagarajan Kumararaja for Super Deluxe, Rima Das for Bulbul Can Sing, Praveen Morchhale forWidow of Silence, Jhanu Barua for Bhoga Khirkee and Abhishek Chaubey for Sonchirya
Best Actress – Tabu (Andhadhun), Neena Gupta (Badhaai Ho), Alia Bhatt (Gully Boy), Rituparna Sengupta (Ahaa Re), Jigmeet Dewa Lhamo (Chuskit), Zerifa Wahid (Bhoga Khirkee)
Best Actor – Ayushman Khuranna (Andhadhun), Ranveer Singh (Gully Boy), Vijay Sethupathi (Super Deluxe), Manoj Bajpai (Bhonsle), Amitabh Bachchan (Badla), Vicky Kaushal (Uri: The Surgical Strike), Namdev Gaurav (Namdev Bhau)
Best Film – Andhadhun, Gully Boy, Badhaai Ho, Sui Dhaaga, Super Deluxe
