Mukul Sharma, a well-known polymath, science writer, actor, and Konkona Sen Sharma’s father, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 69. Sharma, who is survived by his wife Binita and two daughters Kamalini and Konkona, is fondly remembered for his role in Aparna Sen’s award-winning Bengali film Paroma. He was earlier married to Sen but they eventually parted ways. Apart from acting, Mukul Sharma also dabbled in the word of science and was the editor of Science Today Magazine. He even wrote a popular column called Mindsport for the Illustrated Weekly of India magazine.

Later, his column was shifted to Sunday Times where it received a wider audience. The classic column, which had gained a loyal fan base, went on for 25 years until Sharma finally bid adieu to it in August 2007. Sharma was also a very creative story writer and director Vishal Bhardwaj had even bought three of stories. Ek Thi Dayan, which released in 2013 and starred Sharma’s daughter Konkona, was one of them.  That’s not all! Konkona’s directorial debut A Death In The Gunj was also based on Sharma’s short story.

Offering her condolences, singer Rekha Bhardwaj took to Twitter and wrote, “A Dear Dear friend. Who teased and made fun n made everyone laugh around him besides being a great writer. Rest in Peace #MukulSharma @konkonas Sorry for your loss. Heartfelt condolence.” Film producer Pritish Nandy also tweeted, “Mukul Sharma lived next door, was my best friend. We did the front page cartoon for #TheTelegraph I wrote poetry. He, science fiction. When I came to Mumbai to join The Times, he took over Science Today. Wrote MindSport for IWI. He passed away. Yesterday. I hear. In Delhi.”

We hope Konkona and her family find the strength to deal with this huge loss. May his soul rest in peace!
