There was bad news for both cricket fans as well as Bollywood industry on Sunday, March 10. While Australia defeated India on the pitch, the India-Australia ODI in Mohali that had a nail-biting finish also affected the business of all three films which were doing well at the box office. These films include Luka Chuppi, Badla and Captain Marvel. While the films had been doing brisk business till Saturday, there was a sudden dip in the collections on Sunday. The weekend is usually looked upon as the money spinning days for any film, so the dip in numbers will affect badly on the film’s collections.

Badla had taken a good start at the box office with day 1 at about Rs 5.04 crore and Saturday showing a jump to Rs 8.55 crore. However, the cricket match affected the evening and night shows of the film. Raj Bansal, an exhibitor from Jaipur tweeted: “Badla collected approximately 9 cr. The nail biting match affected the collection majorly.”

The business of the other films Luka Chuppi and Captain Marvel too took a hit. Trade analyst Girish Johar said, “The match affected the Sunday box office for all films to the tune of 10 to 15 per cent. It was a high scoring match and audiences remained glued to the TV sets and this directly affected the ticket sales.” Trade expert Akshaye Rathi, while speaking exclusively to CineBlitz, also confirmed the trade getting affected by the match. “The collections fell by almost 10 percent. The business of the films was higher on Saturday than on Sunday,” he shared. While all is not lost, and the films are going steady at the box office, they may however not be able to make up for this Sunday’s loss.
