In a special ‘Meet and Greet’ event, Bollywood Actor, national award-winning producer, and Habitat for Humanity India’s Brand Ambassador John Abraham felicitated students and Principals of schools across India that have partnered with NGO Habitat for Humanity India in its ‘Rupee for Change’ campaign. John Abraham lauded the students for their efforts and inspired them to continue to give back to society more than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was hosted online to adhere to the social distancing norms implemented by the Government of India due to COVID-19. The Rupee for Change is an annual campaign of Habitat for Humanity engaging schools across the country in advocacy, volunteering and awareness-raising activities to support Habitat’s work of building homes and sanitation units. The young students speak out for the need of decent shelter and sanitation and raise funds in support of low-income families.  In 2019-20 edition of Rupee for Change, more than 44,267 students from 225 schools raised INR 49,26,700 which have been utilized towards Habitat’s housing, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), and Disaster Response projects including COVID-19 relief work.  Students across India took part in marathons and initiated crowdfunding campaigns to realize this unique achievement including the vulnerable communities such as migrant workers, daily wage labourers adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The younger generation holds the key to making India an economically vibrant and socially inclusive nation. I feel proud to be associated with Habitat for Humanity India for more than 14 years. It feels me with great hope and pride to see youngsters turning up in large numbers to make a transformative impact in the lives of marginalized communities. Habitat for Humanity India is doing great work by building homes, sanitation units and supporting people during disasters. As much as you can give, all of you must give because there are countless people without a roof over their heads,” stated John Abraham, actor and Habitat for Humanity India Brand Ambassador.

“It is encouraging for us to see the evolution of the ‘Rupee for Change’ campaign. Passionate youngsters have risen to the occasion to become the change agents that we need. These youths not only contributed towards the campaign to provide decent shelter and sanitation to the people in need, they also supported the vulnerable individuals impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to congratulate the students, their parents, teachers and Principals of these schools for their generosity. We express our gratitude to John Abraham who has championed Habitat for Humanity’s cause for over a decade and has played a vital role in making Rupee for Change a successful national campaign,’ said Rajan Samuel, Managing Director, Habitat for Humanity India.

John Abraham has been associated with Habitat for Humanity India since 2006 and since then has been involved with numerous initiatives with Habitat. He launched the Rupee for Change campaign in 2013-14 wherein the youth serve as change agents supporting the cause of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Housing for All – the national movements that Habitat India is aligned with.
