Met Gala 2019: Deepika Padukone’s Zac Posen dress was inspired by underwater deep sea creatures

Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone’s pink gown may have seemed simple on the outside, but was actually a year in the making according to fashion designer Zac Posen. Apparently, immediately after the 2018 Met Gala concluded, Posen got to work on his ideas for the next one! He wanted to explore the idea of using 3D technology in dressmaking and hence worked with companies like Protolabs and GE to incorporate 3D printing into the designs. 5 of his 9 lucky guests got to display his custom 3D creations for the event in the end, one of them being Deepika Padukone.

Deepika’s dress was apparently inspired by underwater themes and deep sea creatures. The sea-urchin decorations that embroidered the dress took over 160 hours for Protolabs to create, while the dress itself includes large side pieces that resembled waves. Other celebs to sport his one-of-a-kind 3D designs included Katie Holmes, Nina Dobrev and Jourdan Dunn. Dobrev’s silver-white dress too took 200 hours to print at a 3D lab in Germany and was inspired by museum sculptures. Katie’s deep purple dress was reportedly inspired by watercolours, palm leaves and sunset.
