Women’s safety is a big issue that we are dealing with today.  In 2018 a survey conducted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation had ranked India as the world’s most dangerous country for women, ahead of Afghanistan, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

Phree For Safety, an app, brainchild of filmmaker Madhureeta Anand comes as a pre-emptive safety solution. It is the only mobile application of it’s kind in the world that harnesses user ratings to make the world safer plus it is created and founded in India by a woman entrepreneur.

Phree for safety allows people to rate spaces, streets and areas for safety. Ultimately a real time map of safety will emerge thus providing a pre-emptive tool for safety. Phree will also provide a barometer for safety, which will be insightful and important for those concerned with making spaces safer.

Phree For Safety was born out Madhureeta Anand’s need to create a mechanism for vulnerable groups to share information about safety and benefit from it.  Knowing in advance how people feel about the safety of the area, space or street would enable them to navigate the city safely.

The Practical uses of Phree For Safety:

1. Phree can be used by law enforcement and governments to receive real time feedback on safety.

2. Phree For Safety will tell us what are the real concerns with safety and what its users consider safe or unsafe. The factors that comprise safety will become apparent. This information will be available at a macro level. For example the concerns for safety would be different in South Delhi and East Delhi.

3. All users can move through the city with a new confidence.

4. Safety will become a recognised tangible factor for society and will no longer be the onus of those who are victims of an unsafe environment.

Actors Randeep Hooda, Jim Sarab, Gajraj Rao, producer Guneet Monga and social activist Kamla Bhasin were among the renowned names that have tweeted in support of the app congratulating Madhureeta.
