The shooting of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Gangubai has started in Mumbai. Bhansali who is known for the monumental sets in his films has created similar magic this time around too. You step into an altogether different world when you visit Bhansali’s sets. He has recreated the era of 50s and 60s so beautifully that you feel immediately transformed to that time period.

The first thing you see on the sets is the movie poster of Baazi. A further ahead you see Kamathipura police station. That same Kamathipura of Mumbai which still stands almost the same. Bhansali has created two cinema halls of that era on his sets, Roshan Talkies and Alfred Cinema. The poster of Raj Kapoor’s film Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai graces Roshan Talkies while the poster of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rahman’s film Pyaasa ads to Alfred Cinema’s glory.

Another noteworthy thing seen on the sets were the black horse carts which were famous in that time period. Bhansali has created the shops, cafes, buildings of that era on his sets. At many places, you will see the posters of famous film actresses of those times like Madhubala, Waheeda Rahman, Meena Kumari, Suraiya and Nargis Dutt. Bhansali has also given special place for the popular advertising brands of those times like Lux bathing soap, washing powders like Surf Excel and Nirma. Bhansali has recreated Mumbai’s Kamathipura just like it would have been back in the 50s and 60s.
