Abhishek Chaubey is known for making gritty and bold films. And his latest directorial venture is no exception. Sonchiriya, which released yesterday, has garnered rave reviews from the critics and the film is also being lauded on social media and rightly so. But there is someone else who is also mighty impressed with Chaubey’s work. Well, we are talking about critically acclaimed and National award winning director Vishal Bhardwaj. Interestingly, Abhishek and Bhardwaj’s association goes long back as the former had assisted the latter on his films like Omkara and Maqbool. In fact, Bhardwaj himself is associated with Sonchiriya as he is the one who has given music for the film.
Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey, Sonchiriya is a dacoit drama set in Chambal. While praising the film, Vishal Bhardwaj said, “To make Omkara as a western film, like a western-genre film, was Abhishek’s idea and 12 years later, he has taken Omkara to some other level in his Sonchiriya. I think it’s a very mature film and the performances are nuanced.” The 53-year-old further added, “As a director, he has grown by many folds since Ishqiya. His command over his craft is now very matured. Like for instance, in the major scene (in the film) where the shootout happens and the kids die, he didn’t shoot the shot of the kids and that shows the confidence of the director. It’s not that the shot was edited out later, it was not even shot because he was very sure that he doesn’t want to show the massacre of kids.”
While Sonchiriya is being appreciated from all quarters, the film failed to get cash registers ringing on Friday as it witnessed only 20% occupancy during the morning shows. Anyway, we just hope the film does well over the weekend because after a long time a dacoit movie has come and we are just happy that it has brought back the essence of all the earlier ones like Sholay, Bandit Queen, Paan Singh Tomar, and many others.
