Sushant Singh Rajput Death Case: The Timeline

Here is the timeline on sequence of events that happened after Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging at his residence on June 14. A week after his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty left his house who is now being accused of abetment and siphoning of funds from the actor’s bank accounts.

On June 14: Sushant was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the bedroom of his Bandra residence. Mumbai police registered an ADR and started the inquest proceedings under CrPC to ascertain the cause of unnatural death.

June 17: Casting director Mukesh Chhabra who director Sushant’s last film Dil Bechara was one of the first ones to record the statement

Jun 18: The actor’s girlfriend and actress Rhea Chakraborty records her statement

Jul 6: Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali records statement in the case. He was allegedly questioned about the two films the actor was thrown out of  which included Ram Leela and Padmavat

Jul 18: Filmmaker and Yash Raj Films (YRF) chairman Aditya Chopra records his statement with Mumbai Police.  Chopra was allegedly questioned about the film Paani which was shelved by him and Sushant walking out of his contract with YRF.

Jul 25:  Sushant’s father KK Singh lodges an FIR in Patna for several offenses including abetment of suicide against Rhea and her family members. The FIR also had Sushant’s manager Shruti Modi name in it.

Jul 27: Mumbai Police records filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s statement. It is alleged that Bhatt is closed to Rhea and had reportedly told her that Sushant was mentally ill

Jul 29: Rhea moves SC seeking transfer of the FIR in from Patna to Mumbai.

Jul 31: ED  files a money laundering case in the matter. Rhea, her family members, managers, and house inmates are questioned by them

Aug 4: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar says the state government has recommended CBI investigation in the matter. Mumbai Police Commissioner says 54 persons in all have recorded their statements in the case.

Aug 6: CBI says it has lodged an FIR in the matter.

Aug 6 Rhea, her family members, managers, and house inmates are questioned by ED after Sushant’s father alleged that she had siphoned off Rs 15cr from Sushant’s bank accounts.

Aug 7: Centre moves SC seeking to be made a party in Rhea’s plea.

Aug 8: Rajput’s father K K Singh moves SC, opposing Rhea’s plea. Maharashtra government too files a caveat in the case.

Aug 10: Rhea moves an additional affidavit before SC alleging media trial.

Aug 11: Maharashtra govt tells SC that Bihar Police lacks jurisdiction. SC reserves judgement on Rhea’s plea.

Aug 19: SC upholds transfer of the Patna FIR to the CBI in the case.

So it will be CBI that will be investigating the case and Mumbai Police has been asked by SC to cooperate in the case. ED will continue the money laundering case and director Rumi Jaffrey has been summoned to know if any financial transactions had happened for the film that co-starred Rhea Chakraborty with Sushant as the male lead.
