At the screening of the documentary Harvey Weinstein- The Inside Story, after the film was shown, a panel was set up for discussion on the same issue. Present on the panel were Swara Bhaskar, Dia Mirza and documentarian Anand Patwardhan. Swara comes across as carrying a strong image, and one assumes that in the course of her films, she might not have faced issues with MeToo cases. But she revealed this, “I earlier thought I am not attractive enough and none of the things one hears of like the casting couch happened with me. But later, I realized that we are so used to handling and managing such things, that only after 6 to 8 years and on a panel like this, did I realize and understand that what happened with me was harassment.”
She further added that it escaped her mind that it was harassment because he didn’t touch her, and she managed to let it not happen. Swara was shocked that she didn’t realize it herself earlier, because the way girls are brought up, always managing and coping didn’t make her realize it. Earlier, she thought that the director in question was being an idiot and an a****le, but it was predatory behavior.
While the storm of the Me Too movement rages from the West to Bollywood, many voices spoke about their encounters with such incidents, where men are in power and the women can’t do anything about it, and in some cases vice versa. Swara Bhaskar was bold enough to express her views and discuss her past experience at the panel, inspiring more girls to understand such behavior happening around.
