A lot can happen on Twitter! And the year 2018 was a prime example of that. From praise to criticism, love and hatred, trolling and pleading, everything trended in India in the year that passed by. The trending topics weren’t limited to the usual suspects – Bollywood, sports and politics – social movements like #MeToo also triggered a huge number of tweets. As we do a round-up of things that the Twitterati traffic in India was driven towards, let’s take a look at the tweets that received significant response.

In India, where cricket is followed as a religion and celebrated as a festival, football has struggled long enough to get fans and their support. So much so that the Indian football team skipper Sunil Chhetri had to make a candid public plea through a video on Twitter. His appeal to Indian football fans asking them to fill the stadiums to show their support for the Intercontinental Cup 2018 was retweeted by more than 59k users and liked by over 138k. Thus, making it the most retweeted and most liked tweet of 2018.

Celebrity couples are not letting go of a chance to show their love and affection for their spouses on social media. The marriage of Bollywood and cricket produced the most liked tweet of 2018 when Virat Kohli tweeted a picture of him and his wife actress Anushka Sharma, on the occasion of Karvachauth. The most liked tweet of the year won over 216k hearts, quite literally.

 

Most Influential Moments on Twitter of 2018

2018 was the year when Twitter reacted massively to #JusticeForAsifa and political debates trended during #KarnatakaElection. 2018 was also the year when Twitteratis celebrated India’s achievers in Asian Games, PV Sindhu, Bajrang Punia, and Hima Das. #DeepVeer started trending as Twitteratis showered their love and wishes on the newly-wed Bollywood star couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.

South Indian films are not only flooding cinema halls with audiences, but also making waves online. 7 out of the top 10 hashtags in India on Twitter in 2018 belonged to South Indian films (#Sarkar, #Viswasam, #BharatAneNenu #AravindhaSametha) and TV shows like #BiggBossTelugu2. The return of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2018 resulted in #WhistlePodu trending. The latter half of the year saw the emergence of the #MeToo movement exposing sexual harassment instances in Bollywood and other industries. The movement cannon-balled into an avalanche, thanks to the wave it created on Twitter.
