Jaina ShahLeela Chitnis a well-known star from the 40s entered the films as an extra to support her 4 children. She was a leading actress for a period of seven years i.e. from 1937-44 and was publicised as one of the first graduate ladies from the society in Hindi Cinema.
She played her first role as a mother to legendary actor Dilip Kumar in the movie Shaheed (1948). Later, she played a mother for 22 years played a mother on screen to various artists. Some of her famous films include Guide, Ganga Jumna and Awara.
The actress died on July 14 in the year 2003 in Danbury, Connecticut, United States where she lived with her eldest of the four sons.
