After facing flak and being removed from The Kapil Sharma Show, Navjot Singh Sidhu has run into some major trouble! But this time it is a political issue. The Congress leader has been banned from campaigning for 72 hours with effect from 10 am on April 23. Surprising, isn’t it? But why has been barred? Well, the Election Commission (EC) has found Navjot Singh Sidhu guilty of violating certain provisions of the Model Code of Conduct and Representation of the People Act, 1951 during the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections 2019.

Turns out that during a public rally for Congress in Barsoi and Barari of Katihar district in Bihar, the former cricketer made an objectionable speech. According to the EC, the tone and tenor of the speech could aggravate the existing differences or create mutual hatred between different religious communities. The speech also appealed to secure votes on religious lines. And thus, he violated the Model Code of Conduct. He was sent a notice on April 20, to which his lawyer replied back on April 21.

However, the EC was not convinced with his reply. And hence, they condemned his speech as well as his conduct. They punished him with the following verdict. The EC wrote in an order, “The Commission, under Article 324 of the Constitution of India and all other powers enabling in this behalf, bars him (Navjot Singh Sidhu) from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, road shows and interviews, public utterances in media (electronic, print, social media) etc. in connection with ongoing elections for 72 hours from 10 am on 23rd April, 2019.”
