“Meri Sakhi”, a short film featuring 80 to 85 women, was shot across various Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra. Weaving the emotions and situations of women wearing sarees, Mihir did extensive research across the country and picked a few characters and their personalities, all connected by the common thread of wearing the saree.
“Meri Sakhi” is not just a film but a tribute to the sari, a symbol of empowerment, grace and cultural heritage. This beautiful and simple garment is a carrier of memories, emotions and traditions passed down through generations. It reflects the essence of heritage, stories of ancestors and the spirit of culture. Through “Meri Sakhi”, the filmmakers aim to celebrate the sari as a woman’s steadfast companion, a witness and participant in the most important moments of her life.
The film is enriched with soulful poems by Arun Gourisaria, whose poems depict the deep rooted connection between a woman and her sari. His poetry portrays the sari as a confidant, a source of strength and an adornment of pride. Each line resonates with the experiences of countless women who find comfort, beauty and identity in their saris. Gourisaria’s words allow the audience to delve deep into the intimate moments that define this bond, bringing to life the emotions and stories woven into the fabric.

Shah’s involvement has been crucial in capturing the essence of this profound bond, and her voice resonates with the strength, beauty, and grace of the women celebrated in “Meri Sakhi.”
Sharing his vision for the film, director Mihir Upadhyay avers, “‘Meri Sakhi’ is a tribute to all the women who wear their sarees with pride, grace and love. It is a celebration of their journeys, their resilience and their unflinching spirit. We have attempted to capture the essence of their relationship with the saree, portraying it as a silent witness to their joys, struggles and victories. Through this film, we offer a glimpse of the rich cultural fabric that the saree represents. The poetry of Arun Gourisaria, brought to life by the soulful singing of Shefali Shah, has been instrumental in this portrayal, giving us the words, emotions and soul needed to tell this story authentically and beautifully.”
