After all the excitement of release dates of other films being shifted around, Thackeray is all set to hit the big screens next week on January 25. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is playing Balasaheb Thackeray in this biopic. Interestingly, he has played many real life characters before this and many of the films that got him appreciation were biopics or were based on real events.

To list a few, in Nandita Das’s Manto, Nawaz played the character of the famous writer Saadat Hasan Manto. He portrayed with finesse the pain and inner struggle that Manto had gone through when he had to leave Bombay and settle in Pakistan. In the 2015 release Manjhi – The Mountain Man, Nawaz played Dashrath Manjhi who is popularly known as the ‘Mountain Man’. Dashrath’s achievement was that he had carved a path through a 25-feet high mountain using only hammer and chisel.

Nawaz is known for his versatility and his portrayal of off-beat characters right from the very beginning. He also has a special interest in playing real life characters and is known to bring them alive on the screen. Nawaz says, “I get inspired from real life characters and not from films. My entire observation and learning is from real people”. Portraying such characters is not easy – his roles have been taxing and needed a lot of hard work. “It is true that you give a lot to your character and in return it also takes a lot from you. This give and take is a process,” he adds.

After Thackeray he will be seen in director Ritesh Batra’s Photograph, releasing on March 8. Photograph will also be screened at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival. Nawaz and his hunger for playing real life roles has given us some good cinema, and we look forward to more of it.

Let us know in the comments section below whether you think Nawaz has managed to capture the essence of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray or not.
