A career in showbiz and glamour is relatively short lived and comes with a shelf life wherein stars’ fate changes every Friday. Just like there are deadlines to be met in the corporate, actors too have deadlines to meet and high-riding expectations to fulfil. So, like we slog it out at our work desks through the week, the pressure of living a character and giving life to it leads our stars to the gyms where they work on transforming their bodies.
The new-gen actors go to extreme lengths to get into the skin of their characters and work on developing believable body types that can sometime need them to bulk up while other times shed several kilos rapidly. Though experts advise against the trend as it can be unhealthy and risky in the long run, here are 5 actors who nonetheless went onto achieve exceptional body transformation for their roles:
The master of guises and Bollywood’s ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ Aamir Khan has won hearts with many physical transformations for various roles that he underwent. Audience loved his ‘teacher-next-door’ act convincingly played in Taare Zameen Par which everybody loved. He then sent everyone in a tizzy with his incredibly herculean physique and 8-pack abs that he worked on building for his subsequent outing Ghajani, where he played an action hero. And just when we thought body transformation couldn’t get crazier, Khan lost all of his hard-earned muscle for his role in 3 Idiots because he had to look like a student. While all of this was impressive, his transformation for Dangal was even more astounding. Aamir gained a lot of weight in his attempt to look like wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat. He did not use prosthetics as that didn’t give him satisfaction. Now, these are signs of a through-&-through perfectionist!
John Abraham has always been a fitness freak. The star usually sports a muscular build but took it to another level when he got ripped for his role in the 2011 action film, Force. What made the transformation even more shocking was how he went from portraying a nerd in Jhootha Hi Sahi the previous year to being featured on the front cover of men’s fitness magazines and doing shirtless spreads in Maxim India the following year. To train for Force, Abraham ate 25 to 30 egg whites in a day. He further supplemented his diet with whey shakes and protein bars.
Actor-Director-Singer Farhan Akhtar is also considered to be a perfectionist among the new-gen actors of Bollywood. Farhan Akhtar took 13 long months to change and transform his body and make it more athletic for his role in the blockbuster Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He was dedicated to his regime and worked out in two shifts for 5 to 6 hours daily and for six days in a week. For this role, Farhan gave his 200% to get the physicality right. One look at the transformation pictures and you’ll know what we are talking about.
One of the most energetic performers on-screen in current times is undoubtedly Ranveer Singh. The man is a complete entertainer and never fails to impress audience with his vigour and vivaciousness. In his 2018 film Padmavat, he played the role of a cruel king, Khilji. For the character he was required to gain a lot of muscles and so he went ahead and did it. But soon after that, he had another venture lined up that was Gully Boy. For his role in this one, Ranveer needed a lean body so he again went from muscular to normal.
Another spectacular body transformation in B—town was that of Hrithik Roshan in Super 30 and War. This one inspired scores of people as the drastic change that Hrithik displayed showed his dedication to his craft. While he gained a lot of weight for his outing in Super 30, he went from flab to fab in his next War, which was an action film and demanded him to look like the Greek God once again.
