Love, loyalty and compatibility are the basic tenets that hold a marriage together and make it last. When we fall in love, we take vows to keep alive the warmth and fondness for each other as long as we are alive and maintain the sanctity of marriage. And especially when celebrities tie the knot, it all plays out perfectly like a fairy tale romance for their ardent fans.
But often this picture-perfect disposition turns out to be a myth. Be it the dark side of glamour, or the prying eyes of tabloids or maybe the Cupid striking twice (or maybe even more times for some), the fact remains that matches made in heaven do end on earth. As a result, the best of Bollywood couples went their separate ways. So, here we delve into those dreamy Bollywood marriages that dramatically ended in divorce:
- Aamir Khan – Kiran Rao
After 15 beautiful years of togetherness, actor Aamir Khan and his wife, Kiran Rao, recently announced their separation with a joint statement which left everybody baffled. In their statement, they mentioned how they were now going to ‘begin a new chapter in our lives — no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other.’ The iconic star had met Kiran back in 2001 on the sets of Lagaan where she was working as an assistant director. They soon fell in love and got hitched four years later. Earlier, Aamir was married to Reena Dutta for 16 long years, before getting divorced in 2002.
- Arbaaz Khan – Malaika Arora
After spending 18 years creating lovely memories together (technically 22 if we include their dating period), actress-dancer Malaika Arora and actor Arbaaz Khan called it quits in 2016 and got divorced in 2017. It was a mutual decision of the couple with Malaika having the custody of their son and Arbaaz having the rights to visit him whenever he wants. Though separating legally, the two continue to be cordial and are often spotted dining and vacationing together. They have always said that they shall remain an integral part of their lives.
- Farhan Akhtar – Adhuna Bhabani
Ace actor-filmmaker-singer Farhan Akhtar, known for starring in path-breaking movies like Rock On, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, ended his 15-year-long marriage with celebrity hairstylist-wife Adhuna Bhabani. The duo have two daughters Shakya and Akira. For some time, certain rumours had been doing the rounds about trouble brewing between the couple. Yet, the news of their separation was unexpected and had taken everybody by surprise. Eventually, the couple had issued a joint statement in the media disclosing about their separation in January 2016 and had requested to be given their privacy and to keep their children out of it. Their divorce was finalized in 2017.
- Anurag Kashyap – Kalki Kochelin
This celebrated couple of Bollywood started living separately much before their divorce came through. Anurag and Kalki had fallen in love while shooting for the movie Dev D back in 2009, and got married in 2011. It was Kalki who had confirmed the news of their separation while giving an interview in which she stated that she wasn’t sure where her relationship with Anurag was going. The couple was granted divorce by a family court in Mumbai in 2015. Post their divorce, Anurag has been reportedly seeing a 23-year-old woman.
- Hrithik Roshan – Sussanne Khan
Hrithik and Sussanne were a highly adored couple of Bollywood, always exuding the ‘so-in-love’ vibes. So, when the official news of their split started doing the rounds, it left everybody, including their fans, friends and even loved ones flabbergasted. The couple had been married for 14 years and had courted each other for nearly 4 years before they decided to tie the knot. It was in November 2014, that the actor and his wife were ultimately granted divorce.
- Dia Mirza – Sahil Sangha
The dainty actress Dia Mirza left her fans surprised when she made an announcement about parting ways with her husband, Sahil Sangha, after 5 years of marriage in August 2019. Sharing a heartfelt post on her Instagram handle, she revealed that the decision was mutual so that both can lead their lives the way they want. Initially, keeping mum about it, Dia later opened up about her divorce and spoke about how people’s behaviour changed towards her post her move of parting ways with her former husband.
Well, these doomed tales of love again reiterate the fact that maintaining marriages is tough in the glitzy and glamorous world of showbiz!
