February, the month of love, is usually reserved for the quintessential romantic comedies and shows that are based on Valentine’s Day, but this year has something else in store for the audiences. The fact that ‘content is king’ is now taking a new shape with studio’s production houses and digital platforms bringing out of the box  content. Taking a leaf out of this new age phenomenon of watching films and shows from the comfort of your living room, here are a few dark, gritty, intense tales worth watching from some of the credible makers in the industry.

1. Mithya by Applause Entertainment

Ever since the trailer of Mithya was dropped last week, it has had audiences raving about the complicated equation between teacher-student, played by Huma Qureshi and debutant Avantika Dassani. Huma plays the role of Juhi, a Hindi literature university professor, and Avantika plays her student, Rhea Rajguru. What begins as a matter of academic deception, snowballs into a psychological combat between the two, as neither are willing to back down. The intense trailer outlines what seems to be a dark narrative with twists and turns. The show drops on Zee5 on 18th Feb, 2022. Coming from the house of Applause Entertainment, the show is sure to be on your watch list this month.

2. My Best Friend Anne Frank by Paul Ruven

The Dutch drama, My Best Friend Anne Frank, directed by Ben Sombogaart, tells the story of the friendship between Hanneli Goslar and Anne Frank. The film will be premiering internationally on 1 February 2022, via Netflix. It is the first Dutch cinema film about the life of Anne Frank, one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust under Nazi Germany. It is based on American author Alison Leslie Gold’s Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend.

3. Gehraiyaan by Dharma Productions and Viacom 18 Studios

The upcoming Shakun Batra directorial, Gehraiyaan, will star Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa in pivotal roles. Padukone will take on the role of Alisha, who engages in the act of infidelity with Zain (Chaturvedi), her sister’s fiance. The film is scheduled to premiere on 11 February 2022. From the trailer to the rushes, and chemistry between Deepika and Siddhant, the film which will mark Deepika and Ananya’s OTT debut, has become the talk of the town and fans are eagerly waiting for this one.

4. The Great Indian Murder by Ajay Devgn and Priti Sinha

If you love to watch murder mysteries, The Great Indian Murder will be a perfect watch. Based on the ‘Six Suspects’ book, its captivating story will keep you hooked to the screen. Its main cast includes Pratik Gandhi and Richa Chadha. The two actors are playing the role of investigating officers who will be solving the murder case, which has six suspects. The series will be released on Disney+ Hotstar and is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. It also marks Ajay Devgn’s debut as a producer in the digital space.

5. Rocket Boys by Roy Kapur Films and Emmay Entertainment

Another one of the shows that has already released and won my heart is Rocket Boys. This period drama about the birth of Indian space program is based on the lives of Homi J Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai, played by Jim Sarbh and Ishwak Singh respectively. While the story in itself is really inspiring to say the least, it’s the acting of these two talents that makes it all the more appealing and intriguing. If you haven’t watched it yet, you must, as it is streaming on Sony LIV.

6. Bestseller by Alchemy Productions LLP

One other project that we are totally looking forward to is Mithun Chakraborty and Shruti Haasan’s web debut, Bestseller. The show’s trailer was dropped yesterday and it is all things interesting. The mystery of a troll behind a genius novelist, that puts the lives of everyone around him, including the muse of his next story, at risk, has just increased my curiosity to uncover the truth. Also featuring some great talents like Arjan Bajwa, Satyajeet Dubey, Gauahar Khan and Sonalee Kulkarni, this show is directed by Mukul Abhyankar and will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video from 18 February.
