Sarkar, Satyagraha, Nayak: 7 films inspired by politics that you should watch!

These films have been inspired by our political system and strive to create awareness about what goes on in the world of politics

The 2019 Lok Sabha Elections have just begun and we urge each and every one of you to go out there and cast your vote, without fail. If you’ve been up-to-date with the latest news, you’ll already be well aware of the hate politics that has been spreading lately, and to stop that, you are just a wise vote away. Choose wisely so the right people win and help in taking our country forward. On that note, here are seven films inspired by real-life political drama:

1) Sarkar (2005) – Sarkar, that starred Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Kay Kay Menon in pivotal roles, was a huge critically and commercially acclaimed hit. Most of all, it was loved for the way it indigenized The Godfather (1972) and brought about a political angle to it. Subhash Nagre, also known as Sarkar (played by Amitabh Bachchan), portrays the role of a powerful gangster who is later slandered for murdering a politician. Sarkar is later brought to justice by his son Shankar (played by Abhishek Bachchan). In the movie, the titular role was also loosely inspired by politician and Shiv Sena founder, Bal Thackery.

SARKAR

2) Satyagraha (2013) – Another strong political film with a political message. The film also clearly showcases the power of social media. Dwarka Anand (played by Amitabh Bachchan) is a retired teacher who serves his time in prison for having raised his hands on a corrupt official while trying to acquire the due compensation for his son’s death. While Dwarka is in prison, a determined Manav (Ajay Devgn) gathers a huge crowd with the help of social media and his friends to get Dwarka out of jail. All in all, it is a compelling film that mirrors the reality around us.

SATYAGRAHA

3) Kissa Kursee Ka (1978) – This is a political satire on the system and egocentric, money-minded politicians. The plot revolves around an evil politician who tries to woo Janta (played by Shabana Azmi). Two rival parties, Bhikharimal and Garibdas, oppose each other for the elections that will commence in the Jan Gan. All in all, it is a humorous take on our former PM Indira Gandhi.

KISSA KURSEE KA

4) Nayak: The Real Hero (2001) – The film focused on the protagonist of the film Shivaji Rao (Anil Kapoor), who is challenged by the Chief Minister to run the state for a day. The success of his action propels the people of the state to push him towards joining politics. Vigilant and well-educated, he emerges victorious when he reveals everything about the Chief Minister Balraj Chauhan (Amrish Puri). Under the governance of Shivaji Rao, every basic need is taken care of and people of the village no longer live in fear.

NAYAK THE REAL HERO

5) Rajneeti (2010) – A Prakash Jha film, this political thriller simmers above all of his other political films. The film was critically acclaimed and featured an interesting ensemble. It was influenced by the tales of Mahabharata and the film, The Godfather (1972). It starred Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Arjun Rampal, Sara Thompson and Manoj Bajpayee.

RAJNEETI

6) Accidental Prime Minister (2019) – Based on the life of former PM Manmohan Singh, the film looks at his tenure as the Prime Minister of India and the kind of power he had over his cabinet and the country. Starring Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh, it was helmed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte.

THE ACCIDENTAL PRIME MINISTER

7) Daddy (2017) – This film was based on the life of a gangster-turned-politician, Arun Gawli, played by Arjun Rampal, who also co-produced and co-wrote the script. The film chronicles Gawli’s journey from being a feared gangster to entering politics and his metamorphosis into Daddy.

DADDY

Recently, a film titled The Tashkent Files, based on the mysterious death of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri hit the screens. Anyway, these are our top favourite political films that have tried to create awareness and given us all the much-needed reality check of the politics playing around us. Guru, Dhoom 2, Umrao Jaan – 5 must-watch Aishwarya Rai – Abhishek Bachchan films

On Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan’s 12th anniversary, today here’s taking a look at their most memorable films

AISHWARYA RAI ABHISHEK BACHCHAN

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan have been the ‘IT’ couple of Bollywood ever since they got hitched in 2007. Apart from making stunning appearances at various events nationally and internationally, the couple has also impressed the audience with their on-screen chemistry. But that’s not all! Apart from having successful film careers, the two are also doting parents to their seven-year-old daughter Aaradhya. While we are sure this powerhouse couple will continue to entertain us in the coming years, for now, we are listing down five of their must-watch films in which they starred together.

Guru (2007) – A masterpiece by director Mani Ratnam, this film impressed the critics and the audience alike. Loosely based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani, Guru is about a simple villager who is ambitious and comes to Bombay along with his wife Sujata to make it big in the city of dreams. Ash is paired opposite Junior Bachchan in the film and their sizzling chemistry is hard to miss.

GURU

Dhoom 2 (2006) – Abhishek and Aishwarya weren’t paired opposite each other in this one. In fact, Abhi played the role of a cop whereas Ash played the antagonist in this action film along with Hrithik Roshan. Despite that, Dhoom 2 was a visual delight for their fans and the whole cat and mouse chase kept everyone hooked to the film which received much praise and adulation from the critics as well.

DHOOM 2

Raavan (2010) – This isn’t a typical Ramayana tale but is about a bandit Beera Munda (Abhishek Bachchan) who abducts the officer’s wife Ragini (Aishwarya Bachchan) and falls in love with her. Eventually, he lets her go only to realise that she is head-over-heels in love with him as well. On realising this, her husband uses her as a scapegoat to reach the Beera. Even in this film, Abhi and Ash’s chemistry is electrifying.

RAAVAN

Umrao Jaan (2006) – This romantic-drama narrates the story about Nawab Sultan (Abhishek Bachchan) who catches the eye of the elegant and the poetic Umrao Jaan (Aishwarya Rai). The two have a passionate romance but unfortunately, Nawab’s father doesn’t approve of it and soon disowns his son. This film is quite complex with all sorts of twists and turns but Abhishek and Aishwarya do justice to their roles.

UMRAO JAAN

Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (2000) – This was their first film together and though it didn’t receive a lot of praise, the songs did become very popular amongst the masses.

DHAAI AKSHAR PREM KE

These are their most known films together and on their 12th anniversary, we wish them a blissful marital life filled with happiness and love. Stay tuned to CineBlitz for more.

Salman Khan, Taapsee Pannu are following in the footsteps of these 4 actors – here’s how

Salman Khan and Taapsee Pannu will be seen playing older characters in their respective films, Bharat and Saand Ki Aankh

Bollywood actors and their commitment towards their work is on a different level these days. It’s nothing new in Hollywood for actors to prepare and go through drastic physical changes to become the character they would be playing in order to be more relatable for their audience. Be it weight gain, weight loss, getting six pack abs or even adding more years to their look, actors have never held back.

In recent years, we have seen the same kind of dedication from Bollywood artists as well. While many could say there is a lot more vanity in our industry than in the West, there are bold actors who don’t adhere by these norms and are taking the big step of transforming completely into their onscreen characters. Earlier this week, posters of Salman Khan starrer Bharat and Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar’s Saand Ki Aankh were released online. In their respective films, all the three actors will be seen playing much older characters and they have completely moulded themselves into their on-screen persona and look almost unrecognizable. Well, believe it or not, but in the past, quite a few actors did the same. Take a look…

Salman Khan in Bharat

Salman Khan’s Bharat is one of the most anticipated movies to release this year for all the obvious reasons. The poster of the movie is out and Salman looks almost unrecognizable. Sporting five different looks in the movie, the poster of Bharat shows Salman in a much older version, sporting a salt-n pepper look with heavy beard and moustache

Bhumi Pednekar & Taapsee Pannu in Saand Ki Aankh

In Saand Ki Aankh , Bhumi and Taapsee will be playing the role of the world’s oldest women sharpshooters. Bhumi will be seen as Chandro Tomar while Tapsee will be playing Prakashi Tomar. Staying true to their roles, both the actresses have visibly added years to their look with the help of make-up.

John Abraham in RAW

In the newly released spy thriller Romeo Akbar Walter, John is seen sporting 15 different avatars that too successfully with the help of prosthetics and specialist Preetisheel. Especially John’s look of a 70-year-old man is very convincing.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Sarbjit

In Omung Kumar’s directorial venture, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the role of Sarbjit’s sister. The films showcase the 22 years that Sarbjit spent in jail for alleged spying and terrorism. For the same, Aishwarya was happy to leave her vanity aside and played a much older character than her real-life age.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas in 7 Khoon Maaf

Priyanka Chopra has never shied away from taking up risky projects. So it’s not surprising that PeeCee did Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf way back in 2011. In the film, her character ages from 20 to 65 and goes through several marriages at different points in her life. With the help of prosthetics, Priyanka played 7 completely different parts, one being that of a 65-year-old woman.

Rishi Kapoor in Kapoor & Sons

When Rishi Kapoor played 90-year-old grandfather in Kapoor & Sons, he got some help from Oscar-winning American make-up artist Greg Cannom of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Titanic fame. The producer of the film had to shell out Rs 2 crore for the actor’s unbelievable transformation and the look took 5 hours of hard labour every day.

April 15 will be remembered in the coming years as the day that one of the most iconic monuments in the world witnessed doom. The 850-year old Notre Dame Cathedral in France erupted in a fiery blaze, leaving the world in shock. An interesting fact about Notre Dame that you may not know of is that the monument is one of Bollywood’s most preferred shooting locations.

The song Ilahi from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which had Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, was shot in front of the monument. The scene in which Ranbir gets chased by a drug dealer gives us quite a glance of the astounding cathedral.

YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI

Ranbir-Anushka-Aishwarya starrer Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) also had scenes shot with the historical monument in the backdrop. In the song An Evening in Paris, you can see Ranbir and Anushka dancing on the street with the Notre Dame cathedral to the far left.
