NFDC and MIFF to give a fillip to short films & documentaries in a big way

Rajini Acharya, renowned Lifeographer and former President, IDPA moderated the seminar “Beyond The Lens: Funding and Monetization in Documentary Filmmaking” on June 16 at the Films Division Complex during the MIFF festival.

Among the panellists were Mr. Ilia Tolstov – Deputy CEO of the cinema park “Moskino”, Svetlana Naudiyal (Programming Director MUBI), Arun Thapar (President – Content & Communication Networks | Network 18), and Girish Dwibashyam (COO Docubay).

The speakers eulogized on the methods for funding and benefiting from documentary productions and also shared information about strategies to enable filmmakers to fund their productions and reach a larger audience with their captivating stories, grants, crowdsourcing, collaborations, television arrangements, film festivals, and direct distribution.

Rajini Acharya spoke at length on how in today’s world of digital media, the creation of documentary films, short films, and animation films has undergone a drastic transformation. With mobile phones becoming powerful filmmaking tools, many new talents have emerged, showcasing their creations. These films often incur significant costs, and their creators constantly seek ways to monetize their work and generate revenue by showcasing their talents.

Ilia Tolstov – Deputy CEO of the cinema park “Moskino” elaborated on the activities of the Moscow Movie Cluster as the Founder of film.moscow and i.moscow and also talked about the digital business processes of the Moskino Cinema Chain.

Arun Thapar spoke about any specific benchmarks, for the selection of documentaries and how Indian documentaries fare in the international markets.

Svetlana Naudiyal shed some light on the functioning of her organization and said in what way she thinks Indian documentaries fare in the international market.

Girish Dwibhashyam threw some light on the way Docubay is functioning and also talked about the kind of content that Docubay prefers to acquire while focusing on the best methods for recovering the cost of a documentary and making it profitable.
