The list of nominations for the Academy Awards for 2019 has been announced and an Indian film called Period. End of Sentence has landed in the top five nominees of the documentary short subject category.
Period. End of Sentence is a documentary film set in India which talks about the taboos around menstruation and also features the real Pad Man. It is executive produced by Guneet Monga and co-produced by Guneet’s Sikhya Entertainment. The film focuses on women in India fighting against the age old stigma of menstruation. It also shows the story of the man on whom Akshay Kumar’s 2018 film Pad Man was based on, Arunachalam Muruganathan. The 26-minute film is set in Hapur in northern India and it follows girls and women there and their experience with the pad machines installed in the village. The film is directed by Rayka Zehtabchi who is an award winning Iranian-American filmmaker. Created by The Pad Project, the film has impressed the Academy jury and has broken through to enter the nominees list.
Director Rima Das’s Village Rockstars was India’s entry in the Foreign Film category, but didn’t make it past the selection stage. The nomination list for the Oscars this year has thrown up a few surprises, with a super hero film like Black Panther being nominated for the Best Picture category. Lady Gaga too is making history by getting two nominations in the same year for the Best Actress and the Best Song. A Star Is Born has received the highest number of nominations. With such interesting names the Oscar ceremony is going to be the most anticipated event of the year and it will be exciting to see who takes the trophy home.
