2018 was a good year for Bollywood with some amazing concept and content-based films. The people ruling the big screen were not the superstars but the next-door faces. The stories weren’t nice, of or for the elite, or stories no one could identify with. They were amazingly normal, and the characters were from amongst us. Where big films with big stars failed to interest the audience, it was the small-town stories and the Pankaj Tripathi in Stree and Surekha Sikri in Badhaai Ho that bought audiences to the theaters. Let’s take a look at the winners of the year 2018 vis-a-vis performances, and rejoice that we are finally moving towards a better future for Bollywood.
# Vicky Kaushal: The new-found national crush of this past year Vicky Kaushal, is on hyper mode, giving us amazing performances. With five releases, of which two were on OTT platforms, Love Per Square Foot (LPSF) and Lust Stories, and three theatrical films, Sanju, Raazi and Manmarziyaan as his arsenal, he blazed his way into public hearts, and doesn’t look likely to leave soon. With his unique earthy charm and versatile acting, we are quite in love with him.
# Radhika Apte: It was hard not to spot Radhika Apte last year even for someone living under a rock, as she was ‘omnipresent’, like Netflix India titled her. Radhika was everywhere—on the big screen and OTTs with a strong screen presence and unique roles. She appeared in six projects, of which two (Sacred Games, Ghoul) were Netflix Original series, one (Lust Stories) was a Netflix Original film, and three (Padman, Andhadhun and Bazaar) were theatrical releases. Whoa! Let me get my breath back! Every part she played was a treat, and we love that she’s all over the place, as long as she gives us the kind of performances she is.
# Ayushmann Khurana: The man for whom a normal storyline is boring and who needs something unconventional every time, Ayushmann without breaking his streak did two very out-of-the-box roles last year. Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho were his releases that made the last leg of the year worth going to the theatres. Damn, this man even impressed us as a blind pianist. Ayushmann, is there something you can’t do?
# Rajkummar Rao: The day is not far away when Rajkummar will be the name of a genre, and his films, the master-classes. Last year, the National Award winning actor entered the Rs 100 crore club with his film Stree, where he played a ladies tailor in a village that has spirit who makes an annual festival visit. Rajkummar did what he does best, portraying vulnerability on screen has been his super power, and with such a script, magic had to happen.
# Taapsee Pannu: Taapsee is winning us with her candid Instagram profile and her superb choice of characters. Playing a lady trying to save her in-laws from false allegations in Mulk, and the complexed Rumi from Manmarziyaan, Taapsee had her heart in both, and our hearts for both. After Pink, Taapsee has become more conscious about her choices and we are the happier for that.
All of these actors were revelations last year, and we definitely crave for more from them. Luckily for the public, this lot also has a good number of projects in 2019, and the wait is getting difficult. Who is your breakout star for 2018? Do let us know in the comments section what do you feel about them!

Salman Khan-produced Nach Baliye 9 started on a grand note last night (July 19) and here are the show highlights – read on
After much hype, we witnessed the grand premiere of Nach Baliye 9 last night (July 19) and we must say the dance reality show lived up to the buzz. From Salman Khan taking the centre-stage to Maniesh Paul tugging the show with his impeccable sense of humour, it was all one great package. The cherry on the cake were the special performances by several TV artistes, from Zain Imam to Mohsin Khan – Shivangi Joshi to Akshat Singh, the show’s pilot episode began on a grand note. And it’s not over! Yes, the show’s premiere is divided between 3 episodes between yesterday (July 19), today (July 20) and tomorrow (July 21).
While we have seen five out of 12 couples being revealed, we are yet to find out the rest. Also, we are waiting for Salman Khan to introduce us to the judges for this season. The couples revealed last night were, Urvashi Dholakia – Anuj Sachdeva, Shraddha Arya with boyfriend Alam Makkar, Vindu Dara Singh and wife Dina, Prince Narula and Yuvika Chaudhary, Babita Phogat and Vivek Suhag. Other than an amazing set and of course the contestants, the highlight of the show were the contestants’ costumes which are designed by Ken Ferns. Check them out here:
Shraddha Arya – Alam Makkar
The current couple was the first Jodi to be introduced on the show. Shraddha looked stunning in her white and golden ensemble, and her headgear and hand-pieces looked equally pretty. The couple tried to exhibit angels-from-heaven look, and it worked for them.
Urvashi Dholakia – Anuj Sachdeva
Yes, the most-talked-about ex-couple Urvashi and Anuj made a stunning entry on the show. While Urvashi wore a multi-coloured gown, Anuj’s bodysuit had some detailed mirror work on it.
Babita Phogat – Vivek Suhag
Wrestlers Babita and Vivek sported looks of a Peacock and Maniesh also joked how he saw pehelwaans as peacocks for the first time, but yes even their sequined outfits were breathtakingly gorgeous, with detailing of peacock feathers.
Vindu Dara Singh – Dina
This longtime married Jodi seemed effortless as they took to the stage, opting for a classic white and black combination, the detailing of feathers only added charm to the costumes.
Prince Narula – Yuvika Chaudhary
The couple that got married last year, was seen sporting a purple-and-golden combination which somewhat looked like Iron Man’s suits and we must say, the high pony only defined sharpness for Yuvika, while Prince’s physique added to the outfit’s charm.
Well, the great night will continue over the weekend and we will be seeing Aly Goni – Natasha Stankovic, Madhurima Tuli -Vishal Aditya Singh, Rochelle Rao – Kieth Siqueira and many more on the show. Also, we cannot wait to find out the set of judges this season, and Mouni Roy performing on Ghar More Pardesiya. Don’t forget to watch tonight’s episode on Star Plus at 8 pm and also, stay tuned to CineBlitz.
Naseeruddin Shah Birthday Special: 5 iconic roles that the legendary actor has wowed us with
As Naseeruddin Shah celebrates his 69th birthday today (July 20) we take a look at five of his most-loved roles of all-time
‘Unconventional’ is a word that’s become Bollywood’s favourite in recent times, but when it comes to Naseeruddin Shah, the word has always been synonymous with his choice of roles. While defining an entire generation of art-house cinema, the veteran is one of the few stars who has also made mainstream films his playground and has successfully scored on both fronts. FromSparsh, Jalwa, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Hai, Ijaazat, to 3 Deewarein, Mohra, Maqbool, The Dirty Picture, and many more, Shah has sailed smoothly through every genre possible and churned out parts that will stay with us forever. Three times National Award winner, a Padma Shri and a Padma Bhushan recipient and infinite nominations and wins to his credit, Naseeruddin Shah is one of the best names in Hindi cinema as well as theatre world, to which he continues to make an immense contribution. Today, the actor who boasts of a filmography of over 230 films, celebrates his 69th birthday and to celebrate it we bring to you 5 of his films that had him play some of the most iconic roles. Take a look:
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron:
This Kundan Shah directorial already has its name registered in the cult films of Bollywood and Naseer’s role of a photographer caught in an unexpected turns of politics and corruption will always be remembered as one of his best. Along with Ravi Baswani, the actor gave us a satire that is easily a gem in Hindi cinema.
Shekhar Kapur’s Masoom saw Naseer play a family man with a loving wife and two young daughters, dealing with a child he had from an extra-marital affair. As a man caught between his responsibility and past ‘mistake’, Naseer’s emotional struggle and suffering shone through beautifully. Undoubtedly, one of his finest as an actor!
Playing a nameless character, a common man – Naseer with this film brought a fresh approach to cinema with this one. How anaam admi tired of his helplessness as a law-abiding citizen, decides to take things in his hands to get justice was portrayed with such perfection that it clicked with everyone who saw it and the film and his role were both highly acclaimed.
Donning a grey character, this film has a special place in Naseer’s filmography. He played a rich, leery, tax-collector trying to harass a poor village-woman (Smita Patil) who refuses to succumb to his sexual advances. He aced this villainous outing with aplomb.
Naseer made his presence felt even in a small role in this Vishal Bhardwaj adaptation of Macbeth. Playing Inspector Purohit, he and Late actor Om Puri playing the other cop, redefined grey and complex characters with utter ease.
Well, here’s wishing the veteran star Naseeruddin Shah a very Happy Birthday and hope to see him continue to win more hearts with even more stellar performances. Let us know which of his films and roles are your favourites. For more updates and gossip, stay tuned to CineBlitz.

From the time she became Miss World to becoming a prominent name in Bollywood and in the west, Priyanka has carved her own niche and a glorious path to the top. She began her career with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, and made a mark playing an antagonist in Aitraaz. Every list of Priyanka’s iconic roles will and should begin by mentioning Barfi. Priyanka played the role of Jhilmil who suffered from Autism. Priyanka embodied Jhilmil to the fullest, and she was just perfect in this Anurag Basu film. While co-star Ranbir Kapoor was amazing, Priyanka as Jhilmil literally stole the show.
After trying all genres, Priyanka was amongst the first few actors to do a biopic. And when she essayed the role of boxer Mary Kom, it was hard to say if they were two different people. From her acting to her transformation everything was quite applause worthy.
Imaging PeeCee playing a docile housewife, who would scarfice everything for her husband’s happiness, was difficult, but Priyanka proved us wrong. In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, Priyanka played the supporting part of Kashibai, Peshwa Bajirao’s first wife and she stole the limelight. From her acting to her dialogue delivery, it only won our hearts.
This Madhur Bhandarkar film got Priyanka Chopra her first national award, which itself proves how she aced her role. Her journey from an ambitious small town girl to a supermodel was truly glorious to witness on the big screen and we must say Fashion was the turning point in Priyanka’s career.
Saat Khoon Maaf
Though not a Box Office success, Saat Khoon Maaf saw PeeCee played seven different characters. Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, Priyanka was at her acting peak in Saat Khoon Maaf where she portrayed the character of a psycho woman, who mercilessly butchers her seven husbands.
Happy Birthday, Priyanka! For more updates and gossip, stay tuned to CineBlitz.
