Killing all the speculations around, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has finally announced that Priyanka Chopra will indeed be playing the lead in his next film Gangubai. Earlier, there were rumours that Priyanka was in talks for the film since a very long time. In fact, she even spoke about the same on Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee With Karan. However, there was no confirmation whether the two would be actually teaming up for the project or not. But now it’s pretty clear that Bhansali will be uniting with PC for yet another cinematic masterpiece.
Technically speaking, Gangubai is SLB and Priyanka’s fourth film together. The 36-year-old was last seen in Bhansali’s directorial venture Bajirao Mastani alongside Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead. Before that, Mrs Jonas did a special number in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Also, her hit movie Mary Kom was produced by SLB himself. While we can’t wait to see what magic these two create on the big screen this time around, Bhansali confirmed the news in an interview and said, “I love the story, it’s been with me for long and I’m keen to make the film. Priyanka and I are in talks.”
Initially, the film was titled Heera Mandi but now it’s called Gangubai. The movie is based on the life of notorious female gangster Gangubai Kothewali who ran several brothels in Mumbai. Apart from this, Sanjay Bhansali has one more film on his plate. Earlier this week, he announced his upcoming directorial venture Inshallah which will star Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt in the lead. SLB will also launch two new faces – Meezaan and Sharmin Segal – in the industry with his next untitled production venture. As for Priyanka, the talented actress will next be seen in Shonali Bose’s directorial debut The Sky Is Pink which will release on October 11.
