Exclusive! Ranveer Singh reveals why rappers feel Gully Boy is their film

Ranveer Singh calls Gully Boy a homage to Divine, Naezy; credits all rappers for their creative value addition to the film

Ranveer Singh brought in 2019 riding high on the success of Simmba. And going by the response the Gully Boy world premiere got at the Berlin Film Festival, looks like Ranveer might have his first hit of 2019. The star is excited about the Zoya Akhtar directorial. And we can’t wait to see what the desi junta has to say about the movie. Not just that, Ranveer is actually thrilled to be doing a film on rappers. In fact, he is elated that they have a sense of belonging and ownership of the film.

In an exclusive chat with Cine Blitz, Ranveer shares that while the film is loosely based on the rappers Naezy and Divine. But he is not playing either of them! He says, “Gully Boy is loosely based on them and that is the theme. But it is an original character creation. The film in a sense pays homage to Divine and Naezy.” As for so many rappers who are talking about Gully Boy, Ranveer says, “They feel a sense of ownership that could be the reason for it. When I signed the film two years ago, I was not sure where Indian hip-hop would be? We are on the threshold of explosion! This is not just music, it is a kind of a revolution, a kind of kranti if I may say so.”

The star adds, “They (the rappers) understand that the scene is going to get mainstream exposure. Therefore I feel a sense of ownership. They feel it is theirs, and it is important to us. We have made it with an inclusive creative collaboration process. They understand that they feel scene ko badhawa milna chahiye. And so they are giving so much love and energy and creative value addition. It is all these little things that has made the film what it is today.”
