The enthusiastic CEO and Co-Founder of RecoBee, Syed Jamal met Cine Blitz at Film Bazaar 2024 on the sidelines of IFFI in Goa’s Marriott Resort, where the start-up had put up a stall to raise awareness about their venture. Here are some excerpts from a Q&A with him.
How was the response to your stall at Film Bazaar 2024?
The response to our stall at Film Bazaar 2024 was overwhelming! It was exciting to see the curiosity and enthusiasm from industry professionals, independent filmmakers, and film enthusiasts alike. Many appreciated how RecoBee leverages AI-driven insights to bridge the gap between content creation and audience engagement. We had meaningful conversations that validated our belief in the potential of data analytics for transforming the entertainment ecosystem.
We signed 3 agreements for predictive analytics, during the event and have 4-5 active leads to close. Content Discovery or Searching What to Watch, the genesis of RecoBee, also came as a common relatable problem which drew the attention of everyone. The fact that RecoBee provides instant and deep recommendations of movies according to one’s preferences without having to scroll and browse through multiple apps, garnered a lot of appreciation.
What kind of profile did most visitors have?
Most visitors to our stall were professionals from diverse segments of the film industry—producers, directors, writers, distributors, media journalists, and marketing strategists. We also interacted with independent filmmakers, festival curators, and a few data enthusiasts curious about how analytics is being applied to the entertainment industry. Their varied perspectives offered valuable insights into industry pain points and opportunities for innovation.

Please explain the concept of RecoBee.
RecoBee is more than just an analytics platform—it’s a bridge between the magic of storytelling and the precision of data. Our app not only offers personalized movie recommendations to help navigate the overwhelming volume of content being produced today, but it also serves as a movie diary. Much like Goodreads for books, RecoBee allows users to manage their movie library—to track what they’ve watched, to rate and review films, and to curate their own watchlists. It’s a place to reflect on the movies that left an impact and to discover new ones to add to your list.
Additionally, the app connects like-minded cinephiles, creating a vibrant community for discussions around films, directors, genres, and more. RecoBee is about celebrating the love for cinema, fostering connections, and making the vast world of entertainment more accessible and meaningful for everyone.
What is your vision for RecoBee?
Our vision for RecoBee is to create a one-stop solution where movie buffs can effortlessly discover the perfect content that resonates with their tastes, moods, and preferences—making the overwhelming search for what to watch a thing of the past. At the same time, we aim to empower filmmakers and OTT platforms with data-driven insights that take the guesswork out of content creation and audience targeting, helping them craft stories that truly connect. It’s about building a bridge between art and audience, fuelled by AI and driven by passion.

For the average film buff, what does your website and app offer?
RecoBee is a companion for every movie lover. It offers personalized recommendations tailored to your taste, curated lists to inspire your next watch, and a space to track your movie journey—like a cinematic diary. Beyond that, it’s a community where film enthusiasts connect over shared passions. Whether you’re looking for hidden indie gems or the next big blockbuster, RecoBee brings the joy of discovery back into your hands, ensuring every film you watch resonates with you.
Our market research demonstrates that Reviews are an important factor for a movie buff to decide what to watch and hence we have built a strong Reviewing platform with a tier of Critics based on the quality of the Reviews. We boast of having around 500 critics from over 40+ countries varying from Indian Regional Cinema to World Cinema!
And for the film industry, how can RecoBee help?
For the film industry, RecoBee is designed to be a powerful marketing tool. By leveraging predictive analytics and demographic distribution, we provide filmmakers and marketers with actionable insights to understand audience preferences and predict trends. Additionally, our consumer app offers targeted marketing opportunities for upcoming releases, powered by deep knowledge of user behavior and viewing patterns. Whether it’s identifying the right audience or crafting more effective promotional strategies, RecoBee bridges the gap between creators and their viewers, ensuring films reach the right people at the right time.
Apart from the bigger productions, can indie features also benefit from RecoBee’s insights?
Absolutely. Indie filmmakers are storytellers at heart, often juggling tight budgets and big dreams. RecoBee is here to level the playing field by offering insights that help indie films find their audience, refine their promotional strategies, and optimize distribution. We want to amplify their voices, ensuring their stories reach those who’ll cherish them. In a way, RecoBee is as much about celebrating underdog stories off-screen as it is about discovering them on-screen.
In fact, Film Bazaar was a great platform for us to meet and connect with Indie filmmakers, understand their unique challenges, and align our solutions to their needs. The agreements we’ve signed here reflect our commitment to supporting these creators. We firmly believe that by addressing the challenges faced by Indie filmmakers—arguably the most creative yet resource-constrained segment—we’re not just solving problems but proving our ability to tackle anything the industry needs.
Do you really think that a film’s performance at the box office can be predicted?
While cinema retains its magic and unpredictability, data allows us to illuminate patterns and possibilities. By analysing audience sentiments, regional trends, competitive releases, and historical data, we provide informed insights that make outcomes more predictable. It’s not about taking away the surprise—it’s about empowering creators to navigate uncertainty with greater confidence. So, we don’t want to score 10 out of 10 every time but 8 out of 10, 80% of the times.
What is your background, and what attracted you to the business of cinema?
RecoBee is driven by a team passionate about technology and storytelling. Personally, my background is rooted in technology—I’ve spent years working on scaling tech platforms and solving complex problems. But beyond that, I’ve been a movie enthusiast for as long as I can remember. Movies were not just a pastime for me; they were a source of inspiration, emotion, and connection. Growing up, cinema became my escape, my teacher, and often a conversation starter with family and friends.
What drew me to this business was the universal magic of movies—how they transcend boundaries and languages to create shared experiences. Pairing my love for cinema with my expertise in data-driven problem-solving felt like a natural fit. It’s rewarding to think we’re helping filmmakers and audiences connect more meaningfully while addressing industry challenges in a measurable way.
Are you seeing RecoBee as a crowd-funding site too?
While our focus is on analytics and insights for now, the idea of enabling creators to raise funds directly from their audience excites us. Crowd-funding aligns beautifully with our mission of empowering storytellers. As we grow, this could be a natural evolution—bringing creators and fans closer while fostering bold new stories.
More importantly, we envision RecoBee as a platform where movie enthusiasts, creators, and professionals can connect, share, and grow together.
