Saare Jahan Se Achcha, Chanda Mama Door Ke, Kalpana Chawla biopic: Bollywood films set in outer space seem jinxed

A slew of outer space films haven’t been able to take off in Bollywood and this has got us wondering why!

The producer of Saare Jahan Se Achcha has been left in the lurch after actor Shah Rukh Khan decided to opt out of the biopic on astronaut Rakesh Sharma. The construction work of the set was already under process when the actor decided to give priority to Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3. It may be recalled that Saare Jahan Se Achcha was earlier offered to Aamir Khan and stayed with him for nearly two years, after which the actor decided to opt out. SRK took it up but within a year he too has put it on hold although the writer of the film Anjum Rajabali continues to maintain the film is very much on track. An industry source said, “It is good that the actor has put the film on hold for now as the actor’s last film that also depicted space travel had backfired big time. So that could be the reason for the actor not wanting to repeat a film with space in it.”

But the Rakesh Sharma biopic is not the only space film that seems to be jinxed! Not one, but many filmmakers including Priyanka Chopra Jonas have been waiting to do a biopic on the late astronaut Kalpana Chawla for nearly three years. The film was to be co-produced by Viacom 18 and Priyanka and was being written by Priya Mishra, but that project is not happening now. Meanwhile Savita Hiramath also claimed that she had the rights for Kalpana Chawla biopic.

Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan was making a film titled Chanda Mama Door Ke with Sushant Singh Rajput which was to be on the lines of the film The Right Stuff, but was shelved later after both Sushant and Chauhan invested at least two years on the project. And now most recently with Zero tanking at the box office, looks like this space in Bollywood is likely to remain untouched for a while!
