Shashi Tharoor attracted trollers when he misquoted the great poet Mirza Ghalib in one of his tweets. Shashi Tharoor had posted a few lines written by Ghalib to celebrate his birth anniversary, only to find out that he was misinformed about his birth date and even the lines that he shared on his social media page were not Ghalib’s work. Mirza Ghalib’s birthday is actually on December 27 while Tharoor posted the tweet on July 20.
Mirza Ghalib’s 220th birthday. So many great lines….— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) July 20, 2019
Soon after this, Tharoor realised his mistake and admitted that he was in fact wrong. He tweeted saying, “Ghalib is an all-time favourite, but today is not his birthday. I was misinformed. Relish the lines anyway!” Shortly after his first tweet, he found out that the lines did not belong to Ghalib as well. This led to him getting a friendly piece of advice from the award-winning poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar. He wrote, “Shashiji, whoever has given you these lines should never be trusted again. It is obvious that someone had planted these lines in your repertoire to sabotage your literary credibility.” Check out the tweet right here:

Tharoor then thanked the lyricist and wrote, “Thanks to @Javedakhtarjadu & other friends, I realize I’ve been had. The lines are not Ghalib’s. Just as every clever quote is attributed to Winston Churchill even if he never said it, so it seems that whenever people like a Shayari, they credit Ghalib for it! Apologies.”
