In the era of social media, relationships, breakups and affairs that often are announced and discussed, get hyped and how. While on one side celebs talk about keeping their personal life private, hints, clues and even pictures are posted online to create curiosity on the other. Somy Ali feels it’s one’s personal choice when it comes to how they are using social media. The Bollywood actor turned humanitarian, who now runs her NGO, No More Tears, adds that it literally boils down to the life one chooses to live.

“An average person, particularly our youth, will always look up to famous people and that includes actors. Thus, their every move is tracked, commended or many times criticized. One can’t escape the accolades or the criticism as they go hand-in-hand. One minute you are worshipped the next moment you are condemned for life. You can’t blame celebrities either as they are caught in a tug of war between what their publicists’ or producers advise them to help promote a specific film that is about to release and what they themselves personally want to reveal on their social media,” answers Somy, who will soon be seen in the new show, FIGHT OR FLIGHT, on Discovery+ beginning from May 26.

Leaving it to one’s own decision and choice of managing their lives online, she draws a comparison of the time when there was no social media to now when it has become a part and parcel of our existence. Somy also harps on the importance of social media responsibility.

“Social media was not around in the 90’s so I can’t say much about this, but even if it were, I would be honest about who I was dating or what I was doing as I never truly cared much for what people said behind my back. You will never stop people from talking as it is in our nature to judge and give our unwarranted opinions. Whether an actor wants to or does not want to do, their relationships status or ups and downs in life will eventually be gulped by social media. It’s like parasites waiting to suck your blood dry and it’s very sad because honestly, it’s the biggest waste of time wondering who is dating whom and who has broken up with whom,” she adds.

Explaining her viewpoint further, Somy says, “Curiosity is an excellent trait and helps our minds grow extensively, but to waste it on gossip is simply sad in my opinion. Truth is that our fascination with stardom will never dissipate which is why so many want to be famous or even attain their 15 minutes of fame at any cost.”
