The trailer starts with a shot of a panting Rey standing in the desert as gusts of sand-filled wind blow across her pensive-looking face. She watches as a speeding ship (most likely a standoff situation between her and Kylo Ren) is headed straight to her. She slowly pulls out Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, making all of us squeal in our seats no doubt, and in one badass backward leap, she dodges the ship by jumping over and behind it. All the time, we hear a voice-over by Luke Skywalker, revealing that Mark Hamill will probably be back for the Episode IX to some capacity. We see the return of Kylo Ren and the repair of his mask. We can also expect the return of the whole gang: BB-8 and his new droid friend, Poe Dameron the handsome commander of the resistance, Finn our trusty old stormtrooper and the ever-present and timeless C-3PO. But arguably the most shocking moment of the trailer, is the dark, bone-chilling and horrifyingly memorable cackle of Palpatine in the back, as the gang looks over a roaring sea to find a large chunk of the Death Star crashed onto the planet. The haunting laugh cruelly revealed the vengeance-fuelled comeback of Darth Sidious, leaving fans biting their nails in anticipation. The trailer also invokes moments of nostalgia with shots of Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian riding zipping through space together, and moments of sadness with shots of Princess Leia who was played by the late Carrie Fisher.

The film’s tagline ‘Every Generation has a Legend’ has been perceived by many as a potential clue for the tone and concept of Episode IX. The film was already shrouded in hiccups after the demise of Carrie Fisher and the departure of Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow from the project due to creative differences. But production has been on track so far with production commencing in 2018 and the release date of the film set for December 20 this year (2019). The confirmed cast and crew of Episode IX will include a mix of Force Awakens and Last Jedi stars, with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Adam Driver (who was not in attendance at the Celebration but is confirmed for the film), Oscar Isaac, Billy Dee Williams, Joonas Suotamo and Anthony Daniels all set to reprise their roles. The new movie will also see the debut of a mysterious new character named Jannah, into the Star Wars universe, who will be played by Naomi Ackie.
