Tiger Shroff is one of the coolest guys we know. Not only as a person, but his looks have also impressed one and all. But, who is the secret guy behind Tiger’s look? It’s none other than Amit Yashwant. The hair stylist has been working with him for the last four years. And he has ensured that Tiger’s hairstyle looks amazing, making him look exquisite all the time. Be it for a red carpet event, a dinner or a movie, Amit is Tiger’s go-to person. In fact, the hairstylist is no newbie. He’s worked with other stars like Disha Patani, Hrithik Roshan, Kunal Kemmu and several others. But how did Tiger meet Amit? And how has their collaboration been? To know that and more, we met up with Amit for a brief chat.

From working in a salon, sweeping the floors, to working with stars like Tiger Shroff, Disha Patani and so on, tell us about your journey!

I am originally from Ratnagiri and I’ve studied till 7th standard only. I failed in 7th, but I wanted to do something big, so I kept working hard. I started hairdressing in Ratnagiri itself, in a small barber shop. I worked there for three years and after that landed up in Mumbai. I started assisting in several small salons, started from sweeping the floor to cutting hair. I saved up all my money and joined the L’Oréal Professionnel Academy, learnt a lot of things.

Post that I joined another salon called Drama Salon Spa. I worked there for 3 – 4 years and with whatever money I could save, I went to London to do an advance course. I returned back to Mumbai in a couple of years and immediately I got a chance to work with Kunal Kemmu. He was the first Bollywood actor that I worked with and I worked with him for several years, before leaving as I reduced working on Bollywood clients. Randomly one day, I got a call to work with Tiger Shroff for Baaghi. Jackie sir requested me. I loved working with him, so I have been working with him for nearly 4 years now.

How did you get your first break as a Bollywood hairstylist?

I used to work for a salon called Drama Salon Spa. We used to help in cover shoots for a haircare magazine and I used to handle the hair-styling.  One such time, Kunal Kemmu was on the cover and during the shoot, he loved the way I worked. His new project was starting, so he asked me if I’d work with him on his movie. Though I didn’t have experience working on films, I agreed. That’s how it started. I started with Blood Money as my first project with him.

You’ve worked with several celebrities, who’s your favourite?

Tiger Shroff! He’s the most chilled out star I’ve seen. He’s like a friend – he eats with us, stays with us, and even travels with us. In fact, he insists for a room besides ours as he wants to chill and do time-pass with us.

Bollywood stars and their haircuts were pretty popular. We used to see several fans copy their favourite actor’s look. But nowadays, we don’t see such a craze. How difficult is it to start a new hair trend or apply ongoing trends now?

To start a new trend is difficult these days. If you are doing a hairstyle for a cricketer or a person, it is easier. But when you are cutting the hair and styling a Bollywood actor, you need to work according to the character. So the thought of trends doesn’t matter.

How did you style Tiger Shroff for Student of the Year 2? What was the brief that was given to you and how did you take it forward?

The makers wanted a basic hairstyle for him, like a guy who is from a small town. It’s his character, so had to follow it and couldn’t experiment much. He can obviously not step out of his house with blow-dried hair and styling if he is staying in such conditions. Also if he travels to college on a cycle, he can’t have properly styled hair. I had to keep all that in mind and scene-by-scene had to think about how his hair should look. So, I decided to keep it short, naturally falling and basic.

We’ve seen Tiger with long hair generally, at least before Baaghi 2. However, the film changed everything. He cut his hair and his new style became the new craze. How did you create it? Was it difficult for you to convince him to cut his long hair?

Yes, you are right, Tiger had never cut his hair so short. And Baaghi 2 was the first time when I gave him a buzz cut. It was a requirement of his character because he was from the army, but he didn’t want to cut it. He was in two minds, because he was not happy with the cut that he had got from someone else for Heropanti. He was like ‘should I cut my hair? Or should I not?’ I told him, you should, it will look good. Then, we cut his hair and he liked it a lot. To achieve the look, we made use of computer graphics and created 5 – 6 looks for him. Showed him how he’d look with such short hair and then we all finalised on one look and you saw the final product.

You use computer graphics and simulations to create looks for him?

Yes, especially for Baaghi 2, I had created all his looks on the computer with the help of VFX. But it was not necessary for Student of the Year 2.

Being a Bollywood hairstylist, how much pressure do you have? Do you have time for yourself?

When you are working in Bollywood with an actor on a personal level, there is always pressure and you don’t have a life. You need to be available always as you can get a call anytime. I am generally in Bandra, at least till 9 pm every day. I have a small salon in Bandra, so I set up everything there and I am available there till 9 pm. If Tiger has to go out or for dinner or anything and if he has to get his hair fixed, he comes over. So, he comes over 2 – 3 times a day, but he is very considerate and a great person to work with!

What’s the next project that you are working on?

I will work with Tiger Shroff only. Student of the Year 2 is over, so now back to the Yash Raj Film. It is nearly complete, but still, some parts are pending, so we’ll get back to that.
