Elections in India have always been a huge affair. Yet again, we are right in the middle of the election season and the biggest festival of democracy is on.

Since over a decade or two, Bollywood has been much involved with politics. So, as this election season progresses, we bring to you a list of celebrities who have ventured into the world of politics. Some, of course, have turned out victorious, while some have failed bitterly. Some’ve stayed on, while some have quit. However, this little collaboration is still going strong.

Urmila Matondkar

Rangeela actress Urmila Matondkar is out to make her debut in politics this year. The actress has chosen to contest the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 on a Congress ticket. Contesting for Mumbai North division, Urmila has been seen actively campaigning since the past few days. Recently, she even made bold remarks on the current PM Narendra Modi.

Hema Malini

Hema Malini in Mathura
The Dream Girl made her debut in politics in the year 2004, after campaigning in Punjab for late actor Vinod Khanna. She soon became a Rajya Sabha member and then took on as MP from Mathura in 2014.

Kirron Kher 

Kirron Kher

The actress-turned-politician Kirron Kher is now a politics veteran. Since 2014, the actress has been an active member of the Lok Sabha from Chandigarh.

Jaaya Prada

Although she made her debut in politics with the Telugu Desam Party back in 1994, Jaya Prada later joined the BJP. But her tiff with a party member led to her quitting the party and joining the Samajwadi Party. The veteran actress was an MP from 2004 to 2014.

Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani

The current Textile Minister, Smriti Irani, made her political debut in the year 2003. From being a model to a hit actress to a producer, she became the Vice President of the Maharashtra Youth Wing in just her second year in politics. In the last election, the actress stood against Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, she is an MP and a member of Rajya Sabha from the state of Gujarat.

Shatrughan Sinha

Shatrughan Sinha
Shatrughan Sinha is currently the sitting MP from the Patna Sahib constituency on a BJP ticket. Recently, after a tiff with his long-time collaborated party, Sinha joined the Congress. The actor will be contesting for the same Patna Sahib seat but on a Congress ticket this time. The actor entered politics in 1992, standing against late actor-politician Rajesh Khanna.

Paresh Rawal

The comedy actor has been an MP from the Ahmedabad East area since the year 2014. This year, on March 23, the actor called off his political career.

Amitabh Bachchan

Big B did a cameo of sorts in politics. In 1984, the legendary actor took a break from acting to contest in the then Lok Sabha elections. He contested from his hometown, Allahabad. But his career in politics was short-lived. He withdrew his candidature after three years.

Jaya Bachchan 


Mrs. Bachchan made her entry in 2004 as an MP from Samajwadi Party and represented UP in the Rajya Sabha till 2006. Last year, the actress was selected as MP for the fourth time from the same party.

Kamal Haasan 


Superstar Kamal Haasan is another newbie in politics. The actor launched his party Makkal Needhi Maiam in February 2018. Although Haasan himself is not contesting for any seats, his party will be contesting for all the 39 seats in the state of Tamil Nadu and 1 in Puducherry.

Raj Babbar 

Boasting a successful political career so far, Babbar had joined politics in the year 1989 with the Janta Dal party. The actor-turned-politician was three times the Member of Lok Sabha and twice of Rajya Sabha. Later, he joined the Samajwadi Party, where things didn’t work out for him and he was soon suspended from the party. He then joined Congress and is now an MP from UP for Congress.

The Raja Babu of Bollywood, Govinda had also made a cameo in politics. The actor entered politics in 2004 and immediately came into power the same year. He won the elections from Mumbai North division, the same division for which Urmila Matondkar will be contesting this year. Govinda was not nominated for the second time and eventually the seat was offered to Sanjay Nirupam. This was when Govinda stepped down.

Sunil Dutt

It was in 1984 that the late actor-director-producer and Sanjay Duty’s father, Sunil Dutt, made his entry into the world of politics. Dutt was elected from the Mumbai Northwest seat for five terms consecutively. He was also the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports from 2004 to 2005. His daughter, Priya Dutt, is also into politics. This time, she is contesting for the Mumbai North Central constituency.

Vinod Khanna

Vinod Khanna

Vinod Khanna”s journey in politics was an interesting and turbulent one. He joined politics in the year 1997 with the BJP. He also served as the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, and later became the Minister of State for External Affairs. The actor won the Lok Sabha elections four times, in 1998,1999, 2004 and 2014.

Bappi Lahiri

Shocked? Well, many people aren’t aware about Bappi Da’s political venture. He contested for the 2014 Lok Sabha election, entering the arena from Srirampur in West Bengal.

Babul Supriyo

Babul Supriyo

Composer-singer Babul Supriyo joined BJP in the year 2014 and won the Asansol seat in West Bengal. The composer served as the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation till 2016. This year, Babul will be contesting elections for the same constituency.

Manoj Tiwari

Manoj Tiwari

The Bhojpuri actor was a part of the Samajwadi Party and won the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in North-East Delhi. In 2014, he switched parties and joined the BJP. He is now the head of the BJP in Delhi.

Ravi Kishan

Ravi Kishan

Ravi entered politics in the year 2014 with the Indian National Congress and later joined the BJP. The Bhojpuri superstar will be contesting in the ongoing elections from the Gorakhpur constituency.
