The movie marks the debut of Bollywood star Varun Dhawan’s niece, Anjini Dhawan. The sweet little film is the coming of age story of three generations. The audience can expect from the film — family dynamics, emotional outbursts and some warm humor.
A coming of age story of three generations, Binny & Family is about a very loveable, conflicted, punk and rebellious teenage girl Binny alias Bindiya Singh (Anjini Dhawan) living in London, and her small-town conservative and traditional grandfather (Pankaj Kapur) from a small town in Bihar are as different as chalk and cheese.
A dramatic incident in their lives connects them together. Can they become friends and make a major difference to each other’s lives? Binny and Family, which is definitely a rollicking emotional roller coaster and a coming of age drama of two generations, sets out to explore that very subtly. In short, Binny & Family is indeed a multigenerational saga that sets out to capture the quirks and whims of each and every age without resorting to overt melodrama.
Ssanjay Tripaathi ought to be congratulated for having dared to weave a subject which is emotionally appealing so much so that he has not diluted the subject by going in for a conventional leading man. To his credit, though some of the scenes are over dramatic, he has directed it without resorting to any melodrama and agony.
As far as performances go, I should say that newcomer Anjini Dhawan, who happens to be the granddaughter of the veteran actor Anil Dhawan, makes a smooth as well as confident debut as Binny and steals almost each and every scene in which she is seen leaving her deep impact in the film.
Supporting her in the film in equal measure is Pankaj Kapur who is also seen on the screen after quite a long time. Rajesh Kumar lives his role as the loving father who does not hesitate to berate his spoilt daughter whenever he ought to while Charu Shankar as his wife and the mother of Binny does a splendid job. Himani Shivpuri, though her presence is limited.
Lalit Pandit and Vishal Mishra score a couple of catchy and melodious songs while Mohit Puri has cranked the camera and captured the exotic locations in the United Kingdom with versatility. On the whole, Binny & Family is a brilliant coming of age of three generations, which holds you almost throughout.
