Star Rating:

Luv Ranjan’s De De Pyaar De directed by Akiv Ali and starring Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Tabu has been on the minds since the trailer released. The trailer had us laughing and hoping that the film would not disappoint. The trailer clearly establishes the premise of the film. But is the film as good as you’d hope it would be? Well, read on to find out.

What De De Pyaar De is all about: 50-year-old Ashish (Ajay Devgn) is separated from his wife Manju (Tabu) and lives in London. Through some common friends, he meets 26-year-old Aisha (Rakul Preet Singh). A vivacious young girl with an engineering degree, she works in a bar when not getting drunk herself. Anyway, both the bar and the degree don’t matter here. What matters is that she and Ashish hit it off immediately. And inspite of their age difference of 24 years, and a night and song later, they find themselves attracted to each other. Soon, they are on the way to smoothening out the creases of the age difference from their affair.

Meanwhile, adding to the creases are Aisha’s ex-boyfriend (played by Sunny Singh in a special appearance) and Ashish’s best friend-cum-psychologist (played by Jaaved Jafferi) who tries to save his friend from the ‘gold-digger’ type of girl and tries to make him consider his age and a pre-nup before any commitment. However the two decide to overcome these age-related hurdles along their path of love and decide to take their relationship to the next level.

For this Ashish wants Aisha to meet his ex-wife Manju and two children Ishita and Ishaan, who are both in their early twenties! And as he and Aisha fly down to India to meet his family, is when things get crazy. Due to certain circumstances, Ashish ends up introducing Aisha as his secretary. Adding to the ongoing hilarious situations there are Ashish’s parents and their neighbor (played by Jimmy Shergill).

Soon, the hot chemistry between Ashish and Aisha turns to a cold war between Aisha and Manju, with Ashish in the middle of the two women. Does he manage to get his family to accept Aisha and what about Manju and Ashish’s relationship, is what you have to watch out for in De De Pyaar De.

Yay: Yes, a large part of the humour is centred around age-related jokes. But they do evoke laughter and you find yourself laughing every few minutes. The Jaaved Jafferi and Sunny Singh tracks are hilarious and even in their brief roles, the two actors leave you smiling.

The first half of the film is brightened by the fresh pairing of Ajay and Rakul. Ajay seems at an easy relaxed pace and most at comfort playing this role, while Rakul fits the part too and brings in a certain charm. Their chemistry together is amazingly convincing. But if the first half belonged to Ajay and Rakul’s sweet and spicy chemistry, the second half belongs to Tabu. She aces once again in both the comic scenes as well as the emotional ones like a pro. Her chemistry with Ajay comes across as comfortable. Full marks to the casting here!

The rest of the supporting cast, especially Kumud Mishra and Jimmy are impressive too. The instant attraction between Ajay’s son and Rakul is hilarious and the scenes funny. The dialogues are not over-the-top and the comedy doesn’t rely on sexual innuendos to work. The music works well. Overall, Akiv Ali’s editing and direction is commendable and so is Luv Ranjan’s story.

Nay: The equation between Ajay and his daughter (Inayat) should’ve been tackled better. More than the emotional outbursts that her anger should’ve been directed towards, she is reduced to being a screeching banshee. There are some scenes where Rakul seems to be trying a bit too hard, but with Ajay to even out the balance, it’s a save. We really wish there was a bit more of Tabu-Rakul equation to watch. Like most films, things work out rather conveniently towards the end.

CineBlitz Verdict: If you have loved Luv Ranjan’s previous comedies, this one won’t disappoint. In fact, it carries his unmistakable stamp even if directed by Akiv Ali. Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Tabu’s romcom is sweet, spicy and hilarious. A fun entertainer, this one is total paisa vasool and the situational comedy will leave you in splits. The film certainly makes for a fun watch!
