The Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer Gully Boy is all set to release tomorrow (February 14, Valentine’s Day). The Zoya Akhtar directorial is one of the most exciting of the 2019 lot of movies. And looks like it will impress one and all. We say this so confidently because our reviewer, Aakanksha Naval-Shetye just saw the first half and she was impressed. Giving a quick movie review of Gully Boy, she tells us, “The movie carries a shout out to the original gully boys Naezy and DIVINE in the beginning. And a few minutes into the film, you can see that there could not have been a better homage to the two rap-stars. The filmmaker wastes no time in making you plunge into the grimy world of Murad (Ranveer Singh). The film is fast paced and Zoya Akhtar establishes her world very well.”
Aakanksha further adds, “Murad’s angst and his reluctance to succumb to the system even as he finds solace in music is translated brilliantly by Ranveer Singh. The perfect foil for his silent anguish is his love Safeena (played by Alia Bhatt). She is a firebrand, street smart and fighting her own battles as a girl. Murad realises early on that his salvation from a life of drudgery lies in music. As he sings Apna time aayega. Yeh shabdon ka jwala teri bediyaan pighlaega. These lines set the pace for his embarking on a musical journey. He finds support in Shrikant a.k.a MC Sher, a rapper. And that’s of his musical journey starts. Meanwhile he finds resistance at home and the struggles seem never ending”
Summing it all up, Aakanksha reveals, “It is gripping. Ranveer and Alia with Sher make you a part of their world and you are hooked. Zoya Akhtar has done a fantastic job, especially for making us connect with the characters. Kalki’s entrance as a music producer keen to collaborate with the new rapper sets pace for second half.” Intriguing till now, right?
